Ten boats steamed out of Dana Point to battle it out in the 2011 Zane Grey Invitational, the first event in the California Billfish Series presented by Typhoon Polarized Optics.
Most of the fleet headed south in search of tailing striped marlin on day one of the fishing action, and for the crew on the Shark’s Parlour, the E6 square of the tournament grid proved to be the lucky spot. Angler Jesse Henry hooked the tournament’s first striped marlin on a live bait at 10:55 a.m. Just 20 minutes later Jesse had his team on the board with 100 points for the first release in the event.
Tournament director Ali Hussainy decided to stretch the tournament grid to the south just before the event to help teams find more fish and it was here where Shark’s Parlour found their striped marlin.
“We talked to some guys before the tournament who said there was fish down there,” said Hussainy. “So we stretched the tournament grid and opened up the area to include it.”
Fishing was tough to say the least, and the fish released by Shark’s Parlour was the only one on the board for the day. The team on the Riviera 47 Shark’s Parlour, including Jim Sloan, Tom Sloan, Eric Hermann, Bryce Hermann, Rick Triguiero and Jesse Henry took home the Daily Jackpot and move into Day Two in the top spot overall. However, there is still plenty of time left to take home the title in the Zane Grey Invitational. All it takes is one big fish to move up the leaderboard.
Thanks to the tournament’s sponsors, several teams scored some nice raffle items. Vilhelmina won the first radio raffle to take home a Montauk Tackle Co. button-up shirt and a Pakula Marlin Lure. Other winners were Shannon Rose and End of the Line who take home Swag Bags from www.BDoutdoors.com. The final raffle winner of the day was Exta Sea who took home a Montauk Tackle Co. performance shirt and a Pakula trolling lure.
