The offshore teams in the Zane Grey Invitational are ready for battle. Fishing begins today and the top boats in the California marlin scene will be out there competing for nearly $80,000 in cash prizes.
The event will be run out of Dana Point this year to take advantage of the striped marlin bite just off the beach. It appears that tournament director Ali Hussainy made the right decision to move the event to Dana Point as the fishing continues to produce, with crews catching striped marlin on both jig strikes and bait. Fish have been caught every day on the local banks and the timing couldn’t be better.
The Zane Grey Invitational has always attracted the top offshore boats in California, and we’re excited to see how many fish the competing teams will tally. You can follow all of the action online thanks to a new Live Scoring feature on the tournament website, www.catalinaclassic.com. All of the catches, hook ups, positions and times will be recorded as the event unfolds so make sure to check back often if you’d like to keep up wit the bite.
Spectators can also come down and check out the weigh ins which will take place at the Dana Point Fuel Dock. The Zane Grey Invitational Captains Meeting, dinners and award’s presentation will be held at the Wind and Sea Restaurant in Dana Point.
The Zane Grey Invitational is the first tournament of the California Billfish Series presented by Typhoon Polarized Optics. The next tournaments on the agenda are the Catalina Classic and Avalon Billfish Classic, which are fished simultaneously on September 18-20.
In other tournament news, the organizers are happy to announce that they are bringing back the traditional Prime Rib Dinner for the Catalina Classic and Avalon Billfish Classic Award’s Dinner. The new owners of the events, who also own and operate BDoutdoors.com, asked anglers and past winners what could be done to improve the tournaments and one thing everyone said they missed was the prime rib. Well, you spoke and they listened. All teams can once again look forward to a delicious prime rib dinner with all the fixings at the historic Casino Building on Catalina. Event organizers are excited to bring back this tradition, which is sure to be a big hit. Come hungry!
Time is of the essence if you’d like to take part in the largest billfish tournament series in California. Make sure to get your paperwork in, your team ready, the tackle tuned and the boat primed. It’s going to be a great tournament that you don’t want to miss.
