One of the most tedious things incurred when rigging a wire leader is backing the wire off of the coil that it comes in a little bit at a time. It can take several minutes just to get the leader you need and if you’re not careful the entire spool of wire will unravel and explode like a Slinky.
To save ourselves a lot of time and hassle I convert the packaging that the coil of wire leader comes in into a dispenser.
Once done, you wont have to take the wire out of the plastic bag it comes in to pull off some leader.
Start by placing a piece of masking tape across the center of the package to prevent the plastic bag from splitting open.
Now take the coil of wire out of the package. The wire is normally bound with twist ties or cable ties. Carefully slide these restraints to one side of the coil so you can get to them from the opening of the bag.
Now find the end of the wire that you believe to be on top. Take the end and poke it through the center of the plastic bag from the inside out so it goes through the tape you placed on the front of the bag. Try not to shift or jumble the coils as this will lead to future problems. Slide most of the coil back into the package with the twist ties up top where you can get to them.
Now carefully undo the twist ties or snip the cable ties. I use my palm to hold down on the coils inside the package to reduce movement. Now slowly slide the wire coil all the way in and close the bag using the bag’s built-in snap closure.
Now you should be able to slowly pull the wire you need out of the hole you made in the center of the package.
Pull slowly and straight up while holding the package down. Going slow gives the wire time to unwind and the wire will not kink if it gets hung up.
On occasion the coil of wire binds up in the package and you might have to pull out the entire coil of wire, cut a fresh end and start over.
The key is to never let the coils out of the bag without holding them tightly. If the bundle springs loose outside of the bag, you’re done!
This little tip will save you a huge amount of time that will more than make up for the few occasional hiccups.
