What Is Fluorocarbon – Why Is It Used For Leader & Line

Fluorocarbon is a combination of elements: Hydrogen, Carbon, and Fluoride, creating a molecule known as PVDF, or polyvinylidene difluoride. Fluorocarbon goes through a process called extrusion, allowing it to become a single strand of line, similar to nylon monofilament, but much more durable. Fluorocarbon’s molecules are tightly packed together making the fishing line much denser and heavier.  It also differs from regular nylon line in its strength and visibility-performance underwater.

In 1971, Kureha Company, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, invented Seaguar, the first fluorocarbon leader and line in the world.  Seaguar is the only company that manufactures its own resin blends, giving them the ability to tailor their products to the demands of specific fishing situations.

One of fluorocarbon’s greatest benefits is that it is almost completely invisible underwater. Fluorocarbon doesn’t distort light passing through the line, due to having almost the same refractive index as water. The refractive index is a numerical value given to determine how light is bent when something extends from air to water. Air to water has a refractive index of 1.33 while air to fluorocarbon has a refractive index of 1.42, very close to one another. This means that fluorocarbon refracts light closer to water, ultimately making it more difficult to see the fishing line when underwater. Sometimes you may receive a reel with a slight tint to the fishing line and this is due to the resins and the extrusion process involved. The fishing line is perfectly fine, the refractive index of 100% fluorocarbon is a constant, so it will never affect the invisibility of the line. Some anglers believe that if the fishing line is nicked, it will shine and lose its invisibility. This, however, is not true due to the constant refractive index. This is a huge factor when fishing and a major benefit. (But you better retie anyway)

Fluorocarbon is made with tightly packed molecules that allow more energy to transfer between them. This is important when discussing the sensitivity of Fluorocarbon fishing line. The make of this fishing line allows easy transmission of information from one end of the line to the other, so the angler will easily be notified if their line is getting bites or simply tickling the bottom. Fluorocarbon also weighs more than monofilament line, which adds to heightened sensitivity from less slack or bow between the lure and the rod tip. Fluorocarbon fishing line is more abrasion resistant than standard nylon monofilament of the same thickness. Fluorocarbon is about the same diameter as nylon with the same break-strength. Nylon fishing line can be affected by the sun’s strong ultraviolet rays, while fluorocarbon is almost completely impervious to the sun’s UV rays.

Unlike the other fishing lines on the market, fluorocarbon does not absorb water, making it completely waterproof. The line continues to have the same strength, sensitivity, and handling underwater as it does when completely dry. The temperature of the water does not affect the fishing line either, making fluorocarbon fishing line perfect for any type of angling, including ice fishing. Fluorocarbon remains usable over a much longer time than nylon monofilaments as long as you re-spool as necessary. So, despite fluorocarbon fishing lines being a bit more expensive, it is well worth it for the high-quality fishing lines Seaguar has to offer and the fishing benefits are being reaped daily.
