The Custom Fishing Rod Advantage

I get a lot of questions from readers regarding the custom fishing rods I fish. Usually the conversation goes something like this. “Hey, what is that jig stick you used on those yellows?” “That’s an RCLB 80M, it’s a really good fit for that grade of fish and won’t kick your butt if you hook a bigger one.” “Nice! Where can I buy one?” “The rod blanks are available at (insert tackle store near the person asking the question)” “I don’t fish custom fishing rods. Can you recommend a similar factory fishing rod?”

While I’ll usually try and point the angler in the right direction, I can’t help but scratch my head as to why someone would be opposed to fishing a custom fishing rod. In hopes of finding some answers, I met up with Sam De La Torre, owner of Island Fishing Tackle in Carson to find out. As it turned out, the biggest misconception people having a custom fishing rod built is cost.

But Sam assured me that these days a rod can be comparable in price or even cheaper than some factory rods.

Even if the price is slightly higher, having the ability to design the custom fishing rod to your body size and fishing style is a worthwhile investment if you’re targeting the potential fish of a lifetime, like these big bluefin that are currently in our local waters. I invite you to watch the video where Sam breaks down the reasons for going custom along with the process of having a custom rod built.
