And the beat goes on… There is good fishing to be had at all lengths of trips for just about any landing you care to go to. The bigger issue these days is just getting on a boat. If you don’t plan ahead, just getting on a halfie isn’t a sure thing these days. I wasn’t originally planning on fishing this weekend, but had an opportunity last minute on Saturday. I tried to get on the Southern Cal to get in on the yellows that are biting local on the 150 spot between Long Beach and Catalina and it was sold out. It’s a shame I couldn’t go ¾. A bunch of those boats, Enterprise (Tim Shiau pictured above on Saturday, August 8th), Victory, Native Sun, had 100+ yellowtail days this last weekend. I did manage to fish with Capt. Gabe Ceballos on the Liberty twilight ride though out of Long Beach Sportfishing. I won jackpot with a log cuda, but it was only a small fix to get me through the week.
This week, I’m hosting an office halfie on the New Del Mar out of Marina del Rey Sportfishing on Saturday. They’ve had a steady little pick on the yellows off Rocky Point, so there’s a chance of a nice fish. Still, I wanted to fish Sunday and get in on the tuna bite between Oceanside and Dana Point and couldn’t find a ride out of Helgren’s or Dana Wharf. I talked to Capt. Jeffrey Markland of the Thunderbird and he told me he’s not even sure when there is an opening to buy a ticket on an open party date. It’s easy to see why they are booked up when he has hauls like the one on Sunday with LIMITS of bluefin tuna.
The San Diego boats are even heading north and fishing offshore off La Jolla and surrounding areas. Capt. Ryan Bostian of The San Diego had a nice hit on Sunday with 142 yellowfin, 2 bluefin and a dodo. Looking longer at overnight and longer range, limits of 2 bluefin was the norm this last weekend.
Up north, the 805 boats enjoyed a great yellowtail bite this weekend.
The Aloha Spirit had a good day on Sunday with a count of 58 that included a 48-pound mega homeguard caught by angler Glenn Tutsami of Valencia.
Look ahead in the schedules and book your time at the rail. Try to go midweek. You’ve got vacation days. Now’s the time to use them. It’s really good people. Make the most of it!
