From initial and unofficial reports, it seems the “Silver Fox”; a gorgeous 68′ custom Scully sportfish was backing into their slip in Sailfish Marina, in Palm Beach, Florida.
As they backed in, one motor died and the other motor went into full reverse.
Boat Crash Due to Mechanical Failure
Despite the captain’s attempts to move levers and then press stop switches the motor continued to pull the boat backwards.
It is reported to have taken out one piling, then a finger pier before crashing into the concrete sea wall. Looks like the back corner crunched in and the boat began to sink. A quick response from Sea Tow brought float bags and the boat will be hauled out. Luckily no one was hurt and I’m sure the rest of the story will unfold as everyone tries to figure out what went wrong.
Electronic controls are very common on most modern boats, and very seldom do they have failures of this type. Unfortunately when they do, it’s not pretty.
