Matthew Clifton of Scorpion Sportfishing recently reported, “Starting about 10 days ago fishing really heated up on the East Cape. We have had a couple of windy days but besides that it has been great to be on the water and a lot of action. The bait has been plentiful and we expect to have outstanding summer.”
Baja Charters Report
The striped marlin bite was “”en fuego this past weekend. Boats looking exclusively for marlin were coming up with up to 5-6 striper releases a day. Hitting lures and live bait, the stripers were on the eat. The past couple of days have been a little slower but we can expect that there will only be more striped marlin (as well as blue/black marlin) coming soon.
While the yellowfin tuna slowed down a tick, chumming with squid on the banks the past week, but the action on porpoise schools outside picked up significantly. Schools of porpoise holding the associated tuna were sometimes found less than 15 miles from shore. The tuna ate willingly, falling for cedar plugs, hoochies and flies. Boats that had live bait did even better, landing better-sized tuna and more of them. This year continues to be a better year for tuna both on the banks and outside.
There were a lot of wahoo in the area this past week. Rapalas or ballyhoo provided some action but trolling the great live bait we have had has led to more strikes. While difficult to hook up consistently, we had as many as 8-9 strikes a day leading to a couple of wahoo in the box.
Nice sized dorado were found offshore trolling marlin lures and ballyhoo this past week. Smaller dorados were seen closer to shore. While the numbers were not outstanding, it is certainly encouraging to see more of these great game fish in the area.
Roosterfish have been prevalent in the area the past week. Again, the nice live bait present was the best bet. Pargo (snapper) have also been biting.
