El Regalo Charters – Fishing Charters East Cape Mexico
Matthew Clifton has always loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his two brothers as they grew up in New Mexico. His brothers Michael and Chris have become hunting guides with Triple C Outfitters in NM while Matthew took the path of law school.
After practicing law for several years, Matthew realized that it was not his calling and quit his job without any idea of what to do next. He filled up his days during the transition period with many hours spent fly-fishing the streams, rivers and lakes of New Mexico. So much so that he was offered a job as a guide by a local fly shop called the Reel Life. Matthew commented, “I accepted the job and loved guiding. Soon thereafter, my brothers and I, together with my mother, purchased a fly-fishing lodge, the Octagon Inn, on the San Juan River in New Mexico. I operated the lodge and my guide service, Tailwater Anglers, on the San Juan for several years before Baja got my attention.”
It was on a trip to Cabo with his guide buddies, Ed Miller, Jesse Lee and Ted Zerfas that really got Matthew’s attention. They fished the local pangas and had incredible fly-fishing action for dorado, roosterfish and sierra mackerel.
“Once I got a taste of salt in my mouth, I was never able to get the idea of operating a Baja charter and fly-fishing guide service out of my head.”
So in 2013, I bought the Scorpion, a 26′ foot center console with twin Suzuki 250 four strokes. Matthew and his brother Michael trailered the boat down mainland Mexico and across the ferry to La Paz. “We caught nice yellowtails as soon as we got there.” Matthew recounted.
It took Matthew almost two years to get his sportfishing and work permits, but during that time he spent countless hours on the water learning the local waters and techniques. Matthew recalls, “During that time, I spent a lot of time on the water and on the beach learning as much as I could from all of the great fishermen of the East Cape. We were pretty successful and I got to share that with my family and friends who came to visit during that time period as well as with many of the locals. I was really looking forward to getting my clients into fish on the Scorpion and from the beach.”
With his operation well underway, Matthew was excited one day when he got a call from Frank Fink, the owner of the charter boat El Regalo, with an offer to buy the boat and operation. “I told him I would sleep on it and let him know the next day. When I woke up, all I could think of was “I HAVE TO BUY THIS BOAT!” The opportunity was too good to pass up. Frank and I completed the sale earlier this year. I am so excited about the operation. It really feels like a dream come true.” Matthew said.
So now Matthew is excited to offer three aspects of his operation to travelling anglers.
“The Scorpion is a lean, mean fishing machine. At 26-feet and twin Suzuki 250 four strokes, it is definitely one of the fastest (if not the fastest) boats on the East Cape. It is loaded with electronics, quality gear and is setup for fishermen of all types, especially fly-fishermen. I plan on spending a majority of my time deck handing on the Scorpion with my captain Ramon as well as providing fly-fishing guide service to my clients who wish to do so. Make no mistake though The Scorpion is not just an inshore boat. We have caught big tuna, marlin (blues and stripers) and big bulls far offshore. The Scorpion will be based out of the East Cape exclusively.” Matthew commented.
“The El Regalo is a luxury fishing boat with an air conditioned salon and all the amenities. The crew, Capt. Arturo Silva and first mate, Jorge Castro Cosio, have been fishing in Baja all their lives and are top notch proffesionals. Past clients of El Regalo will remember them, as they are the same crew as before my purchase. They have led their clients to many big fish and are known throughout Baja Sur for their prowess in fishing the kite for big tuna. Similar to the Scorpion, El Regalo also has top-notch equipment with Seeker & Calstar rods and Shimano reels. El Regalo calls the East Cape home during April – November. It is also available to do custom overnight trips during the prime Magdalena Bay season in early November. During the winter, El Regalo will be in the Cabo San Lucas marina to take advantage of the great winter fishing season there.”
Last but not least, Matthew will also serve as a fly-fishing guide for those anglers wishing to chase roosters, jacks, pompano and even dorado from shore.
So no matter what aspect of fishing you would like to try in Baja, Matthew Clifton has you covered. He and his experienced crews will work their hardest to make your trip successful and special.
Matthew says it best, “Scorpion Sportfishing promises to provide a professional, quality charter and guide service to all our clients regardless of skill level. It is our goal to help clients become better anglers while ensuring each guest has a memorable and positive experience while in our care.”
