San Diego Rockfish Derby
There will be no better way to enjoy the opening day of California’s rockfish season than enjoying the friendly competition of the first annual Rockfish Derby while contributing to two great organizations that are helping our military veterans; Wounded Warrior Project and Heroes on the Water.
The Rockfish Derby will be held on March 1st, 2014 and the tournament will cater to both kayaks and boats. Anglers can weigh their heaviest rockfish up to five total. Participants will be competing for cash and prizes as well as being entered into a raffle for many great prizes and gear, including over 20 custom and Seeker rods.
Everyone will be a real winner, because your participation will directly benefit the Wounded Warrior Project and the Heroes on the Water.
Both of these organizations do great work for our veterans who have sacrificed much for our country. “We will also have a lot of veteran participation in the event,” said tournament director Neil Drake, “Many local charter boats have donated their time and boats to take veterans out for some therapeutic good times.” Neil and his tournament partner, Derek Schultz are both veterans themselves and understand fully the benefits of a stress free activity like fishing.
Anglers can benefit from early registration in cash savings and guaranteeing your swag bag and goodies, which are valued higher than the cost of entering. This will be a great value for the money. Your early entry will get you a tournament t-shirt, swag bag, raffle entry and food and drinks at the event for just $50. After February 28th, the entry will be $60 and on the day of the tournament it will be $75. Still a great value, but sign up early and save $25 dollars.
There will also be an optional 50/50 Side Jack-Pot that will be half for the angler, half for the charities. Five species will qualify for the jackpot: Ling Cod, California Sheepshead, California White Fish, Vermillion Rockfish and Boccaccio. Each fish jackpot can be entered separately by species for $20 dollars per category. Kayak anglers will have their own $10 dollar jackpot for all five fish, and are welcome to enter both jackpots.
Friday, February 28th from 6 PM to 8 PM will be the early bird check-in at the Marlin Club in San Diego at 2445 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego CA 92106.
Saturday, March 1st 4:30 AM to 6 AM is early morning check in at the Marlin Club in San Diego. Kayaks can check in at La Jolla Shores. 6 AM is “lines in” for everyone and 3 PM is the deadline for weigh-in. At 2 PM, food and drinks will start being served at the Marlin Club and the Award ceremony and Raffle Drawings will begin at 4PM.
