First we want to give our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Captain Randy Llanes.
This is shocking to all of us in the sportfishing community and a grim reminder of the inherent dangers of tackling wild creatures.
This incident is certainly unusual and of course details are still coming in, but it appears that a 40-pound-ish swordfish was seen swimming in the back of the harbor and Capt. Llanes jumped in and speared the fish. A struggle ensued during which it seems Capt. Llanes was struck in the chest. Rescue personnel tried to save him, but it was too late.
Capt. Randy Llanes was a long-time captain in the charter boat industry in Kona and was very experienced. Capt. Llanes was the captain of the well-known Sundowner and has spent his career chasing billfish. He was very respsected amongst his peers and will be sorely missed.
Again our thoughts go out to the family of this great, long-time Kona fishing captain. Rest in Peace
