Each year, our most popular contest, The Race To Somewhere, is entered by thousands of BD’ers and web-savvy anglers. Each one hoping they will be the chosen one.
Well, someone is going to win and this year that person is Jason Gutzmer of San Diego, CA.
Jason is a long-time BD member who says he signed up when he and his girlfriend (now wife) bought an old Glasspar Seafair Sedan that was named Mr. Lucky. Lovingly that became his BD handle since 2004.
Jason said, “My wife and I have been part of the BD community for so long. We use Fishdope and have fished the Yellowtail Shootout many times. When I received a PM from BD, I never thought about the Race To Contest. I signed up way back in June and figured it might be about some of the smaller contests I had entered since. I actually totally forgot about the Race To Costa Rica at that moment. We played phone tag for a day and it was driving me crazy wondering what BD wanted. I couldn’t believe it when Michelle told me the news.”
“My family was watching and knew from my reaction it was something good and big!”
We asked Jason how he got started in his love of fishing and like many, he replied, “My Dad started taking me freshwater fishing as a kid and I loved it, but one day he took us on a half-day boat out of San Diego and I fell in love with it.”
“I remember waking up at 4:30 AM as a kid to watch Jimmy Houston and all the tv fishing shows. Once I was in college, I had friends who worked on the local sportboats and I would deadhead on the boats and help out whenever I could.”
“Recently, my Dad and I did a trip on the Tomahawk to chase some of these jumbo local bluefin and though they were not giants, we each caught a respectable 70-pounder. It was awesome to still be sharing time on the water with my Dad. Catching is really secondary to the rest of the experience of being on the water with family, friends, and nature!”
When asked if he has traveled before, Jason replied, “I’ve been lucky to be able to do quite a bit of traveling around the world, but it was not always to fish. I would try to figure out a way to wet a line in many of the places, but it was not serious fishing. I’ve been to Costa Rica once on a cruise. It was beautiful, but we just did the excursion and back to the boat. I can’t believe I’m going back to focus on fishing. In fact, marlin and sailfish are still on my bucket list so we’ll see. Roosterfish would be another dream-come-true fish. I can’t wait.”
We will get Jason outfitted in all of the great gear from our contest partners, AFTCO, Grundéns, Costa, Okuma, and Igloo. Jason will be ready to take in the experiences offered by Crocodile Bay Resort in Costa Rica. Not only does Crocodile Bay specialize in sportfishing, but they also offer a huge array of eco-tours and other on the water adventures for their resort guests.
The resort offers everything the traveling angler could wish for and its nestled in one of the most biodiverse settings in Nature. The food and hospitality are great and the fleet of boats is just a short walk away.
Stay tuned for reports from the adventure. The trip will take place this winter and we will document every fish-catching, nature-loving, tropical second of it.
Congrats to Jason Gutzmer from the entire BD Team and our contest partners!
