The new PENN Fathom Star Drag conventional reel is ideal for any angler looking to get a longer cast or easily fly-line a live bait to a hungry fish. The Fathom Star Drag is perfect for a variety of applications, but it was truly designed to make longer casts for those times when you need a few extra feet to reach a tailing marlin or when throwing iron way out for yellowtail.
The Bad Company team, who’s won just about all of the big-money tournaments on the West Coast, helped design this reel so you know it’s built for offshore fishing.
The reel features an open-top design, which is perfect for jigging, casting and even some trolling applications. The Live Spindle design allows the spool to spin independently of the spindle and pinion gear, reducing friction of the spool when casting. The result is longer casts and smoother retrieves.
A full metal body gives this reel added durability and a total of six shielded stainless steel bearings make for some smooth retrieves. The Versa-Drag system uses HT-100 drag washers to maintain steady pressure, even under heavy loads, and the centrifugal brake system is internally adjustable for good cast control.
The reel offers a gear ratio of 6.0:1 and the maximum drag with a full spool is 25 pounds. PENN makes it easy to monitor how much line you have on the forged aluminum spool with convenient line capacity rings right on the spool. Get past that bottom line and you better crank up the heat.
PENN offers five models for the Fathom Star Drag. The FTH12 weighs 15.5 ounces with a spool capacity of 360 yards of 10-pound mono or 525 yards of 15-pound braid. FTH15 weighs 15.6 ounces and holds 320 yards of 12-pound mono or 500 yards of 20-pound braid. The 17.9-ounce FTH25N can hold 320 yards of 20-pound mono or 650 yards of 30-pound braid and features a narrow design for added line control. The spool on the 18.4-ounce FTH30 carries 440 yards of 20-pound mono or 625 yards of 50-pound braid and the FTH40 weighs 18.7 ounces with a capacity of 350 yards of 30-pound mono or 725 yards of 50-pound braid. Both the FTH12 and FTH15 have a line retrieve rate of 28 inches per full revolution of the handle, while the larger models retrieve 40 inches every time you turn the handle. The Fathom Star Drag reels retail for $199.95 – $219.95.
