Pacific Coast Sportfishing Festival This Weekend

It’s that time of year when saltwater anglers start paying closer attention to the tides and water temperatures and mark their calendars for the 5th annual Sportfishing Festival, produced by Pacific Coast Sportfishing. This year’s Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 5th and 6th at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

“We are always excited about our seminars but this year we are doing something very special by bringing in the nation’s top swordfish team, Team Booby Trap.”

shares PCS editor and show producer Bill DePriest. “These guys catch an amazing amount of swordfish on rod and real, including 172 in a 41 day period in 2012. If you have ever wanted to catch your own swordfish, even from an 18′ Boston Whaler, these guys will show you how to do it.”

In five short years, the Festival has grown into the largest building at the Orange County Fairgrounds and has become a giant kick-off party for the season — a gathering place where anglers, captains and private boat owners can rub shoulders with each other and check out and purchase some of the newest and most innovative tackle for the upcoming season. But most of all, they come for the seminars that PCS bills as “guaranteed to change the way you fish.”

“My son and I come every year” says Ken Verheyen, owner of a 51′ Maritimo. “We would not think of missing it. The quality of the exhibitors and in-depth seminars have really helped us to put more fish on our boat. It’s one of the highlights of the spring for us.”

When it comes to fishing, knowledge is power. Now matter how accomplished an angler you may have become over the years, there are always subtle variations in techniques to try, strategies to employ, and conditions to better understand.

“To be among the best means you’re always learning, which is why we created the PCS Festival”

adds Drew Lawler, PCS president.

The year’s seminar series at the Festival will feature noted author and PCS columnist Mark Wisch who will share the stage with Joe Barian of Bongos fame. “This is like having Joe and Mark in your boat at the same time fishing with you,” says Lawler. “It just doesn’t get any better than this.” Wisch and Barian will be covering fishing Catalina in a two-part series starting Saturday on fishing Catalina’s back side and concluding on Sunday on fishing Catalina’s front side.

Also on tap will be a seminar on fishing the Newport Artificial Reef, which produces white seas bass up to 70 pounds and halibut the size of your dashboard. “The Newport Reef is on every GPS and fishing chart. Sportboats routinely anchor on it and while everyone knows where it is, very few know how to properly fish it, says DePriest. “We’re going to show you how to fish it and when.

On Sunday, another exciting seminar to the series will feature the winning bass team from the SWBA’s San Diego tournament held on the day prior. These guys will be hot off the water and will share their tournament tips for successfully hunting the really big spotted bay bass. If you have never fished harbors for spotted bay bass, you don’t know what you’re missing. They pull much harder than trout and you don’t have to drive six hours to Bishop.

If you can’t make all the seminars on Saturday, come join the Festival again on Sunday and catch the ones you missed. “What separates the Festival from other shows is the content of our seminars. It’s why you’ll see professional captains with 30 years of experience sitting next to you taking notes” says DePriest.

See you at the Festival Saturday and Sunday, April 5th and 6th at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 10am.
