Baitcasters aren’t just for largemouth bass. You’ll see plenty of guides and anglers turning to baitcasters when chasing reds in the Gulf or calico bass on the West Coast. The reason is simple: long casts, fast retrieves and accuracy. With that in mind, Okuma Fishing Tackle introduced the all-new Cedros low profile, high-speed baitcast reel, for both right- and left-handed anglers.

The new Cedros fills a need for a premium, low-profile baitcasting reel constructed to meet angler’s inshore saltwater fishing needs — namely strength, corrosion resistance, fluid handling, line capacity and a drag system that’s up to the challenge of the largest inshore species.

Cedros low-profile baitcast reels are built using Okuma ALC construction featuring Okuma’s T480 aluminum frame along with aluminum right and left sideplates for precision alignment, long-term durability and corrosion resistance. Okuma T480 aluminum alloy stands up to 480 hours of saturated salt spray, a period that takes standard aluminum to the point of catastrophic failure due to corrosion. The sideplates are further enhanced with Okuma’s TCT, or Titanium Coating Technology. TCT chemically bonds vaporized titanium particles to the aluminum sideplates, creating a finish many times more durable than paint. At the center of the core is the machined and anodized spool, cut from A6061-T6 bar-stock aluminum.

With a capacity of more than 200 yards of 50-pound braided line, Cedros’ compact design provides enough capacity to tangle with big reds, striped bass and the other trophy-sized inshore predators.

Cedros’ internal components borrow from Okuma’s Cedros and Makaira offshore powerhouses, including ABEC-5 rated spool bearings, heavy-duty machine cut Dura Brass gears, stainless steel clutch slider, Carbonite drag system and CRC or Corrosion Resistant Coating process. Delivering 14-pounds of drag from the Carbonite stack, Cedros has exceptional stopping power for its compact size. With so many corrosion and strength features, Cedros separates itself from freshwater, or crossover baitcast reels.

Constructed for power, Cedros is smooth as well. The drive system contains six stainless steel HPB ball bearings plus one roller bearing. Casting distance is governed by Okuma’s 7-position Velocity Control System. And the high-speed 7.3:1 gear ratio keeps pace with the fastest fish in the water. Micro-click star drag adjustment, swept-in heavy-duty aluminum handle design and oversized EVA handle knobs complete this tough little reel.

Cedros low-profile baitcast reels include the CJ-273 in right hand and the CJ-273LX in left hand retrieve. Both models retail for $249.99.
