I’m going to assume that commercial fishermen caught this extremely rare deep-water mega-mouth shark off Japan.
It was hauled up from 2600 feet of water. This shark is one of only 58 known sightings of this species. The megamouth was discovered for the first time in 1976.
A public necropsy was performed at the Marine Science Museum in Shizuoka City, Japan. It was a 13-foot long female and it drew a crowd of 1500 people.
One of the most notable Mega Mouth encounters was when incredible first time footage was captured by divers and released by Discovery during their famous Shark Week. It still amazes me that there are creatures on our own planet that we have never seen, or if we have, know so little about.
