Check out this video taken by the Scripps Pier of huge schools of anchovies moving into the shallows. Note how the black cloud of fish opens up around the sharks that are looking for a meal. They do the same thing around snorkelers, Julia Fiedler, Sean Crosby and Bonnie Ludka who provided the underwater video in the segment.
This year the anchovy has replaced the great sardine schools.
Still a great bait for fishermen, but much smaller and more fragile, therefore requiring different techniques and handling. Check out this article from BD‘s Erik Landesfiend about fishing with the returning anchovy.
