“Content is King,” a quote that reverberated around the world when Microsoft Founder, Bill Gates, released an essay in 1996 describing the future of the Internet as a marketplace for content. That future has arrived. Content is consumed at a rapid pace in 2019 and at the forefront of this content are the content creators. These content creators expand across every and all industry giving us a wide variety of content to engage in and entertain us with. In the world of fishing, Captain Jacki Shea stands atop as queen of content creation.
Born and raised in an environment surrounded by watermen, life on the ocean beckoned Jacki at an early age. “Being raised in Jupiter [Florida] is what got me into fishing because you grow up on the water going to the beach, getting on the kayak and you see people fishing all around.”
“I think I got a really good taste for sea life.” Like many parts of Florida, Jupiter boasts a wide variety of fish to be caught. From inshore tarpon and snook to offshore sailfish, dorado, wahoo, bonita, cobia, snapper, and much more, Jupiter is a great place for anglers to reside.
Every angler finds their own path with fishing, whether it be recreationally, as a captain, deckhand, tournament angler, etc., but as time moves forward with technology and social media becoming ever-present, Jacki Shea has become a pioneer for women anglers in the world of content creation. With over 111,000 followers on Instagram and 168,000+ subscribers on her YouTube channel, Capt. Shea has made content creation her full-time job.
Content creators are those who create, curate, edit, and manage content on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Tik-Tok, etc. “It definitely is like a full-time job,” Shea states, “It’s something I’m passionate about and want to continue to pursue. My day-to-day life is a cycle, going out, getting content coming home, editing it, putting it together, publishing it and the cycle continues! People think I’m out fishing all the time but half the time I’m sitting at the computer editing.”
Captain Shea’s content covers her time out on the water fishing with friends and family and it’s from these videos that some of her favorite moments in fishing happen.
I’ve got to admit that any day when the bite is just good, and you absolutely slay are some of the best days. So with that being said, when you are using those techniques and they are working is often my “favorite”. I also enjoy targeting certain species and using certain tackle to focus on a specific type of fishing like bottom fishing, trolling, kite fishing, etc. I’ve got to say there’s nothing like sight fishing. Whether its sight fishing for redfish or the boat becomes surrounded by a school of mahi and you’ve got to pitch whatever you’ve got at them, or you spot a few cobia swimming off a wreck…casting to a fish you can see, and watching them swim up to it, and eat it; there’s nothing like it!
In the last year, Shea has taken her love for the sport of fishing to the next level receiving her captain’s license. After fishing in areas such as California, Florida, Louisiana, Mexico, the Bahamas, U.S Virgin Islands, and Costa Rica, Capt. Shea is working on moving to Louisiana to captain for her boyfriend, Capt. Louis Thornton in his charter business, Fish Killin Charters. “I still have a lot of learning to do as a captain and getting to know the waters of Venice [Louisiana.]” Captain Shea will join a rare club of female captains across the United States. Shea also believes her unique popularity through social media will help promote their charter business.
As Captain Shea continues content creation and being a charter captain, she has set her sights on crossing blue marlin and a bonefish off her bucket list.
