If you’re like most of us, you take your smartphone with you everywhere you go — even those places that put it in harm’s way such as on the boat or at the beach. We all know that a drop in the water or a dust storm of sand could render that handy little computer useless, but the urge to update your status on Facebook is just too strong and the iPhone comes along for the ride.
Today’s smartphones are much more than telephones. They take photos, allow you to check email, show GPS coordinates, play music, surf the net and offer a million different apps for things like tide tables, navigation and of course games. All of that functionality in a handheld device is really perfect for the boat, but the marine elements are tough on such high-tech gadgets.
Water-resistent and shock-absorbing phone cases have been on the market for a while now, but a lot of them are big and bulky. Unless you wear your phone on your hip via a holster, most of these cases are too big to slide comfortably into a pocket. They can also be bulky and make it hard to plug your phone in to a charger, or to access all of the side buttons.
The new LifeProof iPhone case is different. It is sleek and not much larger than a regular phone case. But it offers all the protection you need. It’s waterproof up to 6.6 feet, dustproof and can withstand a drop onto concrete from a height of roughly 6.5 feet. (We didn’t try that with our own phone, these figures are supplied by LifeProof, but we think they’re legit.)
According to the company, this handy case will protect your iPhone from water, mud, sand, dust, snow or ice. That pretty much covers the bases of any adventurer.
The LifeProof case is impressive for sure. While we’re reluctant to dunk our phone, we did submerge an empty case and it stayed dry inside. The unit also comes with a waterproof headphone jack should want to listen to some tunes in the tub, or out on a very wet boat.
But everything good always comes with a few drawbacks. There tends to be a slight bit of space between the LifeProof screen and the actual face of the phone. That can cause some interference when typing. It can also be tough to hear out of your phone with the LifeProof case, unless you are holding the phone just right. They are pretty minor drawbacks considering this case will offer you peace of mind, knowing that your phone is protected but we thought they were worth noting.
LifeProof also offers a complete line of accessories including belt clips, a bike mount, and an armband/swimband.
The company even introduced a new “life jacket” float for the LifeProof case.
LifeProof cases are available in black, pink and white and can be purchased exclusively on the company’s online store at www.lifeproof.com at the retail price of $69.95.
