Dr. Harvey presented South Carolina Aquarium officials with a $75,000 grant that will be used to help fund the Aquarium’s newest major experience, Shark Shallows, opening Spring 2014. Shark Shallows will be an interactive experience featuring sharks native to the South Carolina coast and will help educate visitors of the importance of sharks in the oceans.
Dr. Harvey also presented a $26,700 grant check to Dolphinfish Research Program to purchase satellite archival tags. The Dolphin Research Program has been instumental in tracking the migrations of the popular sport fish and bringing to light new knowledge of the species.
The grants support the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation’s mission to ensure that future generations can enjoy and benefit from a naturally balanced marine ecosystem where fish and other wildlife flourish. Funds for the grants were generated through royalty sales from the South Carolina Education Lottery’s Guy Harvey Scratch-Off game that went on sale July 16th.
“We strongly believe that it’s important to teach and educate children and adults to be responsible stewards of our marine environments,”
said Dr. Harvey. “Investing our South Carolina Education Lottery funds back into conservation and education programs will allow us to build on our existing work in the state and to support some new programs around the Palmetto State.”
