Grundéns USA has signed on to sponsor two top salmon derby series — the 2014 Northwest Salmon Derby Series and 2014 Lake Michigan Tournament Trail. Given their geographic location, style of fishing and history, these events couldn’t be more different, yet they share some common themes. In both cases, anglers set out in challenging water and weather conditions in search of hard-fighting, tasty salmon. Both pit anglers against the fish as well as hundreds of other fishermen seeking to earn prizes and bragging rights. And both tournaments frequently find participants bundled up in Grundéns rainwear and clothing to protect themselves against the elements and keep them on their game.
“Given the popularity of our rainwear and apparel with salmon fishermen, it made perfect sense for us to get involved with these derbies,”
said Grundéns USA President Mike Jackson. “Whether they chase their quarry in the ocean waters of the Pacific Northwest or the rugged environment of the Great Lakes, salmon fishermen are a special breed. They’ll set out in any kind of weather and aren’t going to let Mother Nature get in the way of their fun. That makes them our kind of folks,” added Jackson.
The 2014 Northwest Salmon Derby Series will have 15 events during the course of the year, spread throughout Washington State. Reflecting the year-around salmon fishery available in Washington, events run from early February right up to the final derby of the year, the Resurrection Salmon Derby December 5-6 in Friday Harbor. Several of these family-oriented events have Kids Divisions. The Northwest Salmon Derby Series was created in 2004 by the Northwest Marine Trade Association as a way to boost awareness of the region’s salmon fishing opportunities and encourage family fishing participation. These events also have a history of focusing attention on salmon recovery issues, stressing events that are wild fish friendly. The Lake Michigan 2014 Tournament Trail is a series of 18 salmon and trout tournaments that draws thousands of anglers chasing up to $750,000 or more in total cash and prizes. The series of tournaments begin May 3-4 with the Michigan City Hoosier Coho Club Classic and continues throughout summer, eventually wrapping up with the LRCR Manistee Monster Mania September 6-7.
These events pit some of the region’s best fishing teams against each other and the hard-fighting king salmon, coho salmon and lake trout that call Lake Michigan home. This popular, competitive series even features its own magazine — Tournament Trail — and is the subject of the Salmon Showdown reality fishing TV show that brings the drama and excitement of tournament salmon fishing to the Pursuit Channel.
