Havent been able to get out much lately, so I decided to take my son and his buddy out to chase these Dorado last Thursday just outside of Dana Point. Wind was supposed to get nasty around noon. Figured it would be a quick trip with a chance at some quality dodo.
Right out the gate we find a good patty about 4 miles out loaded with Dorado but can’t get them to go. We keep moving and find another one about 7 miles out, also loaded. I tell the boys to grab a bait and I grab a hot bait and butt hook it and down it goes. Bait is on fire then it gets picked up….I wait and wait then put it in gear. Solid Mahi doing full blown flips out the water. We are still pretty close to the patty so I tell the boys to keep the lines in the water. Just as I’m saying that I see a commercial boat burning towards us. Im on light line so I’m playing the fish and this kook literally drives right through the kelp with his bow. At this point I’m in shock that this is a charter boat. It’s the Reel Fun out of Dana. I’m just shaking my head. We get the Dorado in and don’t even try another pass as the boat is now parked with half the kelp under his boat. We found one other kelp that day but couldn’t get em to go. We did run out to the 14 but the water was 70 ( four degrees cooler than where we found the fish) and very lifeless. Wind came up and we headed in with just the one. It was my PB Dorado but the kids got skunked.
That was our only real shot at biting fish for the day and it was ruined by a boat that I would think had more common sense. Oh well, still had a great time close to the beach. We’ll get em next time.

Some how I’m not surprised at the boat doing that. They own the ocean, it’s in the Geneva convention Sucks for sure, especially trying to get your kids on a few fish.
I’ve had it happen fishing bird piles, haul ass to the pile and get a couple cast in before the party boat would come charging up and put the fish down

I’ve been set up for lobster at Catalina three different times when a charter would come in and set right on top of us and barreling in countless times Fishing local and at the island, they own the ocean

By driving over the paddie.... he assumed it's role as the floating "structure " that the surrounding bait and preditors were drawn to. When no one is there... its acceptable I guess.... but when others are ALREADY there.... just bad manners.

Brother don't laugh, but I've even seen "Day" boats pull up and tie the actual kelp to the bow.... or stern corner.... and just drag it along for themselves. That's total BS as well. Anyways.... at.least you got some fish. Those kids..... they have a gazillion fishing days in front of them.... you'll see. Thanks for posting.

Fish long enough you will see it all As far as a spot boat driving up and stopping on top of patties it must be a strategy of big school of fish on it and we wait it out as the mosquito fleet moves along .Selfish yes but with the kelp and shadow of hull and staying may work out . They don’t have the time and fuel to zip around like us and there as numerous patties to fish. If you look at some pictures from the air many giant schools of Dorados with no kelp in sight and we have all driven right past them every day

As someone who has a small 20' boat, I never try to get anywhere near 50 ft of a paddie. Most of the time, dorado are schooling 30 ft or more off of paddies and not right on them. I'm sorry to hear that the party boat killed your chances at more fish.

Keep your eyes peeled. It's not like a sport boat goes faster than 10mph or is hard to see 2 miles away.

Plant your ass back on the paddy. If they are cool you can rotate. Possession is 9/10 of the law.

Like skilla said, not uncommon to gaff that paddy and take it with you.

At least you got one. Congrats

Did the boat crash the patty, or did he run it over?

Thought maybe "if he ran it over", perhaps he just did't see it? Why else would he run it over?

Couldn’t rotate. They parked on top of it. But we did find others. They just didn’t bite.

Yeah we were at least 30 -50 feet off. Setting drifts north to south. Couldn’t rest though because they parked on top of the patty and didn’t want to risk getting tangled with their passengers:/
