Where is the report?Great report. I just returned from a 3 day and we had a bunch of those nice grade fish on drop shot style sinker rigs using circle hooks. We had a few where the hooks pulled but the majority landed had the circle hooks right in the corner of the mouth so they could not chew thru the 80lb....
It’s not new, it’s the same way we’ve been rigging when fishing squid for yellows and WSB except they tie a weaker line to the bottom of the ring rather than just tie a palomar with a 6ft tag end.Could someone explain how to rig the new sinker method? Thanks
I wonder if the supposed abrasion resistance of fluoro is the difference between being sawed off?he was using 80lb flouro leader tied on to a 80lb mono topshot I believe.
I think it's a little different. When I fish a dropper loop for sea bass and yellow it is a spiders hitch to a double uni out to the hook with the sinker hanging below. The doubled lead going out to the hook being 8 to 10 inches long. It’s not new, it’s the same way we’ve been rigging when fishing squid for yellows and WSB except they tie a weaker line to the bottom of the ring rather than just tie a palomar with a 6ft tag end.
“Drop shot” rig just as you describe has been a go to rig for inshore yellows and bass since I started kayak fishing back in 2010. Maybe it’s just an SD thing but it’s the same except we just tie a palomar to the ring with a long 6ft tag end, stick an 8 oz weight on the end, pin two squids on and send it down.I think it's a little different. The drop shot rig I used for the bluefin used a ringed 2/0 Mutu circle hook with 80lb flouro tied to the ring and a 4 foot section of 12lb mono tied to the same ring 180 degrees from the flouro knot down to the 12 ounce sinker. The hook sticks out at a 90 degree angle with the point of the hook facing up. Hook rides right up against line with no lead out to the hook like a dropper loop rig. Sardine is pinned up thru lower jaw out thru the head between the eyes. This rig lets you bomb a bait down to depth like a jig with no tangles or fouling like happens frequently with a rubber banded sinker above the hook....
I was skeptical about the drop shot rig and how it would properly hook a fish in the corner of the mouth but both of my fish were hooked perfectly with the circle hook. Bites felt like a blue perch pecking at the bait but I would just wind down and come tight....
.Got it. I have only fished something similar when fishing largemouth bass in freshwater...
Could someone explain how to rig the new sinker method? Thanks
JerDog will ship his sinkers anywhere so no need to travel to meet face to face.I guess (in theory) you could use a thru wired torpedo jig for the weight with beefy line and double your chances? I have been trying to find a thru wired torpedo weight in San Diego, but no luck. I know Jerdog has them, too far to travel. Anyone have ideas on getting one?
$48....that guy got a hell of a deal!JerDog will ship his sinkers anywhere so no need to travel to meet face to face.
I have noticed a lot of my local tackle shops in Orange County are now carrying thru-wired torpedo sinkers.
A guy on my last trip bought a rigged thru-wired torpedo sinker for $48 from Fisherman's Landing. Yeah, you read that right...![]()
