I like the penn 545 or 555 hi speed reels. Spool those up with spectra and a topshot and you are all set to go. Rod in my opinion is preference. I would get an eight to nine foot stick.

Looking to buy a set up to use strictly for fishing the yo-yo. Recomendations?

My dedicated yo-yo rigs..

Calstar 870H, Avet JX 40#
Calstar 660H, Avet HX 50#

If you need anything heavier than these let me know.. Don't know the blank #s offhand..

    Yoyo yellowtails I assume??
Newell 533-5, you need speed! (Crank it down to at least 15# drag.) 50# line, you need abrasion resistance!
A 5 1/2ft rod, YES 5 1/2ft, you will need some serious pulling power to lift the YT right after he hits to keep his head up and not heading down towards the rocks. Once you have him started up it's all just grinding on the rail.
You can spend alot more, but I can't count the number of yellows this combo has caught.

For a Yoyo set up I prefer to use rods under 6.5 in length, like a Calstar 660H or Seeker CJBF65H. I have an old Chocolate Saber that is a meat stick that I engoy using. As for the reel, a Trinadad 30 or 40, or Accurate BX2-500, Spooled with 85lb spectra, with about 1000ft of 50lb mono.

I built a superseeker 70h jsut for this. I am not a fan of 2 speeds for line under 60# but jsut got a Saltist 40 2 speed. It took 250 yards of 65# line one and 85 yards of 50 Izor on top. This reel was made for yoyo. 6.3:1 in high for serious speed and 3:1 in low for good grunt without getting too low.

Necro post. FWIW, I find yoyo fishing the least enjoyable form of fishing for yellows. However, it can be extremely effective...

Calstar 700H with pro gear wahoo special 60lb mono....Wind fast, very fast....

Except, I use an Alan Tani 4/0 size handle on the reel. I have been switching over to Super Seeker rods. However, I cannot bring myself to get rid of this outfit. The 700H and Wahoo special work really well.

Which ever one will have me...
I built a superseeker 70h jsut for this. I am not a fan of 2 speeds for line under 60# but jsut got a Saltist 40 2 speed. It took 250 yards of 65# line one and 85 yards of 50 Izor on top. I have the Saltist 50, which is basically the same reel with a bigger spool right? I just bought a GF760 L that I got a deal on. Is this a good combo for the same purpose?

Im fairly new to fishing, so I apologize if this is a stupid question....

If not, what is the best use out of the rod and what is the Ideal reel for it?

    Thanks for the help....
