YFT all messed up this year

Discussion in 'Southern California Offshore Fishing Reports' started by BigPlay, Aug 16, 2016.

  1. Jumped on an overnight on the Producer out of H&M Landing on Monday. Left Monday night and motored south into Mexican waters. Weather was absolute garbage. Huge swell overnight with a few rollers that could toss you out of your bunk mixed in. Fished in 6-8ft seas all day with 10-15kt wind. Some of the snottiest conditions I've ever fished in. The water was dirty green 30 miles offshore.

We saw insane amounts of fish. Literally 3-4 bird schools yellowfin around us at any given moment throughout the day. Anytime we got close to them they would immediately sink out. Sonar schools would not react to chum, By end of day 5 school size (8-15lbs) fish were picked up on giant halco roosta poppers that you'd throw at cow bluefin right at the start of a slide Not a single bite or hook up on bait or flat falls. Also saw a lot of seiners doing their thing too.

Had the same thing Monday. Early we got a school to bite, landed 5 on bait. We were on schools, birds diving, fish jumping and would not touch bait. Poppers and snipers only.

The seiners are on the baby yft? I would have thought they were too small for any market value. Not good.

Seined tuna compromises the quality for market to the point that it wouldn't surprise me if they are chunkin up the yft to feed the penned bft...

Not sure if it's coincidence or not, but the seiners and pens with their tenders are very much near each other.

  6. I saw seiners wrapping and another boat towing pens. The tuna game in mexico is pretty nuts this year. I've fished mexican waters for tuna for years and have not seen them this active

I would imagine our friends on the left side of the Pacific have made arrangements with our friends south of the border in regards to scooping up these tunas. My theory is based on where the greater demand comes from, and who is willing and anxious to collect. Just a theory.

With 6-8 ft seas and 10-15 knot winds, I'm surprised the albacore didn't make a showing. They love that sh*t

The one question I have is,and think about it,the pens are supposedly for Market Bluefin, yet the seiners are wrapping up all the yellowfin they can....it makes perfect sense that they are only using it to feed the more valuable Bluefin. It sucks bigtime. The whole Tuna pen thing has gotten way out of hand. They will wrap fish until Yellowfin are as scarce as Bluefin had become.

Definitely true. I was on a 2 day trip beginning of the month and pretty much same situation for the boat. Ended up going 4 for 4 on the schoolie yft. All POPPER. Out fished everything else. Fish weren't line shy I was rigged with an 80lb mono leader. Those fish are just little babies. Maybe they're just traumatized by all the pressure of the commercial fleets using them as feed for at least a full month now.

Seieners literally turned areas of life into deserts and what is left has become scattered and skittish seen it on last few trips
One area had 12 seiners and pens
Small YFT = cat food and bluefin feed
