What is the best hook to use for yellowtail when fishing a mac on the dropper loop?

6/0 - 8/0 Owner Gorilla hooks. I used to use Eagle Claw 118Mag hooks. Result were not as good. Or if you want a bigger barb, go with the Offshore hooks.

I use owner flyliner 3/0 or 4/0 depending on bait size. For surface fishing and eagle claw circle hooks in the 8/0 size for dropper loop.

When I’m at Cedros fishing macs, slow trolling or fly line, I use the 8/0 Eagle Claw L2005. I’ve had people make fun of them for being too large then end up borrowing some! Save the fluoro for BFT, YT will eat rope. I’ve used 130# when dropper looping at the ‘lupe with a real tight drag and still been rocked. It’s not finesse fishing.

A large j hook. DL is not finesse fishing. Nor are the YT very hook or line shy. They will not think twice about inhaling a Mac connected to 130# mono via double San Diego knot. Something in the 7/0 thru 9/0 range, and pick a manufacturer of your choice...
What he said. Learned this from Ken Corwin years ago. Any time I go drooper loop with a big bait it's with a BIG J hook

Although I agree with the above suggestions, and personally use a large J hook when using big baits for yellowtail, I was very impressed by one fellow who I shared the rail with about a decade ago (sorry but I forgot his name and the boat that we were on -- brain fade) who was using the dropper loop method with decent sized macs, and had tied-on large ST-66 Owner treble hooks. He was running one prong up through the upper jaw with the other two free in front of the mac's face. He outfished me and everyone else, every bite was a solid hookup, while I would get spit about every-other bite.

I talked with him, and his reasoning seemed solid. He said that the main problem with fishing with large, tough baits like big macs was getting the hook out of the bait and into the fish, and with an extra-strong treble hook you had two free points to dig in.

I don't think that it is an issue with sardines or squid, they are easy to rip a hook out of. But big macs have tough faces.

For a mac bait or when there were larger squid or slab bait. 7691

I started using the owner trebles for Wahoo ringed straight to the jig. Had 12 on casting jigs. Boat total was 52 with at least 15 of those fish coming on the troll

Then started using them for lings with big baits. Hook up increased allot

Had mustad ringed j hooks at Alijos in September. Caught the only dropper loop yellow 20ish on a mac. If I had a 7691 I would had used it

But after reading this and rethinking. I would had chose the owner treble

They don't spread.

We use circles here because of rooster fish. I had a bite a few weeks ago on a big live bait and missed the fish. Circles bottom fishing sucks. But we have roosters

It is common practice to release them here in CR. Personally never seen roosterfish on any menu. So its not popular for sure or desired. But some local natives will put them on the family table which is fine

Most professional guides will always want to release them unless mortaly wounded. The guide will ask the fisher if they want a pic out of the water. To please not put fingers inside the gills. When released you point the nose straight down then push/throw them down hard into the water, and off they go. Releasing so they may continue catching roosters for thier clients in the same zones. They are a thrill and very exotic and strong

Once you find them. Its kinda like dorado. They normally will bite as they are very aggressive so its important in many fishers opinion. To conserve them for future fun

One reason why PV has huge bottom fish and roosterfish. Is because the tuna fishing is so good that bottom fish are often back up

If a rooster is taken. The meat can be soaked in milk to draw the blood out. Or make ron don style soup

I use the mustad throw away hooks size 4/0- 6/0 depending on the size of the macs
Last summer I saw a number of Mustad hooks straightened by yellows. These were BIG yellows, over 45# with most at 50#. I had a similar experience on the Vagabond during a night bite. Three 6/0 Mustad hooks in a row almost straight. Luckily Gordon Lackey brought me a telephone pole hook and said nothing will straighten that, he was right. Fish died... My Mustads are in bags waiting for albacore. If I need a J hook it is a VMC and they do not straighten.

J hook to match the size of bait. I usually use Mustad 5/0
Back in the early 80tys , when I did a
Lot of overnight Trips
On the Prowler, with Buss,
He recommended a 1/0 mustad 3X
Treble hook through the nose,
For mackerel,
At the Coronados , for the yellows,
For Fly lining , it worked great,
And I caught my limit of YT,
Doing it, and he new what he was talking about.

Ill ask the dumb question. When using the treble, was it hooked through the nose side ways like a J hook or was one prong started from inside the mouth then up through the top of the nose? Or was it started below the lower lip and up through the top on the nose thus pinning the mouth closed?

The Gucci wire hooks won't work for heavy dropper loop fishing for big yellows. Use the Mustad 7691 j hooks, as big as you bait allows. You won't straighten one of those out no matter how hard you pull

Not a dumb question, that’s how fisherman,
Become better fisherman,
Just go sideways through the nose,
Then the other to are sitting on top,
Deadly, just don’t use it
If there is mostly smaller ones,
Because it messes them up.

I was taught to put one hook in the mouth and leave the other two outside the mouth. It seemed to work, but now I refer a large j-hook (i.e., Owner Gorilla 7/0) in the mouth through the roof.
