TO EACH HIS OWN. So long as its legal. If you think its not sporting to catch small Yellows on heavy tackle then use some 4 lb trout gear. You wanna throw them back then throw them back. You want to keep your 5 fish limit under 24" then keep them. I personally fish for fun and for meat.

Personally I go grab a beer and a burger when it's all rat yellow but I'm not going to tell others what they should do. That's also why it pays to go LR so u get the nicer grade yellows.

Rat yellows turn em loose,to me its about catching something not bringing home meat.I would definitely break out the small rod and have more fun catching one on it than a limit with 40 lb. But hey as long as the crew gets the filet money and its legal thats all that matters right ? never mind a little conservation and ethics.

The world would be a happier place if people would just worry about themselves and not everyone around them...

There is nothing wrong with this thread. I say good job on the OP for making it a separate topic, rather then shitting on some one else's report. Its a fair question, and IMO, worth asking.

I will say this..if it was me, I would take a at least five, maybe a full limit. It all depends on how the trip is going. I fish for meat, and for pig fish, but the pigs are not always in the mud hole.

I think it just looks worse when you see a deck full of rat YT, or foot ball tuna, only because its all in one big pile, but in reality, those guys are no different then me, I just do it on my own boat.

Now, if the fishing grade is good...I will release the small ones, and even some of the bigger ones....like I said, it all depends on how the trip is going.

EDIT: Yes I know the limit is five under 24" and five over 24" . A 25" YT is still a little YT IMO.
It also depends on how often I get out. Not everyone can fish every weekend, or every months. Many people get to go just once a year...so i say to them, load up, and enjoy.

So i payed a few hundred to catch and release small yellow tail no big deal, had some fun on light gear, just don't want to keep them, to small for me. I get my fill of meat from my long range trips, the rest of the year is catch and release, But to each there own.
