    Hey guys,

Thanks for the great responses so far on getting set up on 20, 30, and 40 pound gear.

Another member hooked me up with a sweet Avet for my 30. Thanks Arthur!

I am still looking to round out everything with the 20 and 40 combos, as well as a rod for the 30.

I will buy rods and reels separately, but if we can make a deal on the both, all the better.

    Thanks,

    Peter

Id suggest getting a factory Calstar 800M, and a trinidad 16 or 20. should be able to get that for 300-350 used.

Its a quality set-up that can fish all your line rating but it total money as a 30.

For a three day you probably want a 50 lb setup and possibly even heavier. Try the del mar Fred hall show. They often have some good deals. At the long beach show I bought a saltist and got a rod free.

Check out the daiwa gear, it's less expensive and the quality is great.

If "STARTER" is the true keyword here, then you may look on Craigslist for Daiwa 30H, 50H, 300H, and/or 400H; also for Penn 112H, 113H, and/or 114H. Can go with some combination of the Daiwa's and Penn's to get to the three setups.

Craigslist will usually have better prices than eBay.

With rods (from Craigslist as well), you can easily do all three setups for under $500 total; I know because I've done it. Go for the "bling" reels and rods after a few seasons under your belt.

You have time to read up on all the reels listed above AND learn how to maintain them YOURSELF at www.alantani.com, before your trip.

If you decide this is the route to take, you can PM me for more pointers.

    Welcome to the sport!

Check these out for stater reels, the rods...meh...but for those prices 545 can be used for 30, 40 maybe even 50. The 535 15-30# no prob.
555 was too wide for my liking.
I've used all the GS series reels and never had a problem with them.
