WSB or Shortfin Corvina???

Did a little night fishing in OC yesterday around 8:30. Threw a lucky craft 110 Cherry berry in the surf on my way to a jetty, no bites in the surf but……second cast off the rocks and BOOM!!!! Line was peeling like crazy, the drag was singing, and all I could do was pray that the 10lb. flouro would hold up. After about 7 mins, I saw what I thought was a small shark but when it got closer I realized it was my FIRST WSB! 24.5”!!! Quickly checked the size limit and realized he was 3.5” too short so I hurried up and released it. As soon as I saw it swim away, it occurred to me that I should’ve taken a picture so 3 casts later I caught another one!!!! This one was only 18” and I had my phone ready

It's good to see their numbers coming back so much these days. I'm thinking about going down to the beach and throwing around a sniper to see what's happening since none of the boats are running besides 1/2 day sculpin trips

Yeah it was pretty rare to h’sea them back in the day. I hear ya man, I just got back into saltwater fishing and I’m itching to get on a boat again.

Right on! I had a long hiatus too and just got back into deep sea last year. Once I went once I couldn't stop especially with the crazy dorado bite we had last year. I'm in OC too if you ever want a buddy to go with

I thought corbina had some barb thing under their chins, this thing didn’t have that, and it had some sharp teeth on the top both looked exactly the same just one was much bigger.

Fangs + no belly zipper = Corvina. No fangs + belly zipper = WSB. I’ve caught plenty of WSB from the surf with no bars/stripes.

I read something last night that said that is the reason they’re making a comeback. A lot of people release them because they think they’re small wsb.

The mouth says Orange Mouth Covina to me. Was the tail flat or pointy like an arrow? Flat- WSB, Pointy - Covvina.

I really don’t remember, I was too excited and I didn’t even know corvina existed at the time

I was stoked for your original post, was asking myself the same question. Mouth looks Corvina, but that doesn't change a great night on the beach!
