My father has been converting regular fishing rods into a rod that you can plug your electric fishing reel into directly at the reel seat location. This eliminates the use of the bulky wire that connects the electric reel to the cumbersome battery, and eliminates the need of the giant battery/backpack fiasco I see some anglers using on sport boats. Instead, he inserts 4 lithium ion batteries into the rod butt section, and as mentioned, runs a female connector out through the real seat to plug your reel into. It started as a personal project but he has had many friends and fellow anglers request that he make them one too. I though some of the guys on BD might be interested. Here is an old 20-50lb Shikari rod that he has converted.

Wow! Pretty cool! Curious on run time too and if provisioned with safety cutoff from short/overvoltage/heat etc.
Li-Ion/Polymer is cool technology, but safety is just as important especially in a high humidity and salt water environment.
