I am going to use my AVET MXJ 2 speed (narrow) on a CALSTAR GFDH 900L RATED 15-30#. I want to throw 8 oz leadheads on 7 inch sliders for lingcod. If I use 50# braid the spool will hold 580 yards. My question is will it cast farther with a full spool or 350 yards? Thanks for any input.

it will cast as far as u can cast and the mxj holds about 300 yds of 50lbs spectrs i have two of them
the half spool is for drag
when i put line on my avets i dont fill all the way to leave room so the the line can leave the reel good
hope it helps

I keep my reels with only about 50 yds of line. That way my backlashes are smaller....

No rocket scientist here, but my thinking is, the less line on the spool, the faster it has to spin for the same amount of line to come off compared to a fuller spool. So I think you should be able to cast farther with a full spool.

Casting for lingcod?8 oz. leadheads, keep your fingers out of there.I'm with Carl, just enough line for rockfish even if they have to swim up from the bottom to get the

Why do you care about casting distance when bottom fishing?

Correct ^^^^^^^^

Personally I like Carls approach. Less line = less backlash to dig out....

Sorry brother I dont know the answer.....But I sure wish some of these morons would just not say much at all if all they know to do is spew out of their bungholes! One starts it , then the rest just follow the leader like little girls jumpin' on the bandwagon. Amazing!

AVETS website shows the MXJ 6/4 holding 580 yards of 50 spectra. Is the website wrong? After reading the posts I'll keep the spool just under full, not spilling over.

I'm at the bow casting 14oz jigs into the drift and away from the boat. The current is real strong. By the time the boat passes my jig it had time to sink. When the boat starts to drag my jig I work it and let out line to keep it down. Jigging for Lings.
