Why is it so important for our bait tanks to flow counter clockwise?
Please don't tell me it's because we are in the northern hemisphere...

It's not it is a bunch of shit.........most all the sportboats got circulation both ways..............just make sure your flow is deflected and you have enough flow and not to much an adjustment valve and over pumped is the ticket. Also be sure to have a screen on thru-hull and a strainer.......

most people are right handed. i.e. you hold the bait net in your right hand while getting bait out of the tankso you move the scoop to the left and the fish "swim" into the net.....oh wait i guess us hawaii guys have our bait tanks flowing "clockwise" vs. the westcoast!!!

The theory is that it should circulate the same direction as the Coriolis effect, which determines which way our toilets spin when we flush. If the direction is reversed, you are working against the Coriolis effect which can introduce turbulence in the water.

In actuality, the Coriois effect is such a small force that it could never introduce enough turbulence into your water to affect the bait.

And yes, it's because you are in the northern hemisphere, because the Coriolis effect reverses itself at the equator.

Thanks, thats what I figured. Any time I have spoke to or read about bait tanks counter clockwise is mentioned.

    Next question....

Are bananas really bad luck on a fishing boat? (just kidding) but where did this urban legend come from?

    Spiders.

There are several species of very poisoness spiders that live in banana trees. Crates of bananas would be loaded onto the boat and at night the spiders would come out to feed. Anyone bitten would get very ill or die. Since the sailors did not know the exact reason their mates were dying, they attributed it to bananas being bad luck.

So that time slows down, therefore your bait is fresher when you use it.

Which way the toilet spin have nothing to do with coriolis effect or which hemisphere you are in. Toilets are just designed to flush the way they do. Some toilets have no spin at all. Coriolis force affects the flow of air and dependent on latitude. It's just a piece of the complex puzzle that affects the weather.

    1. Ruler of Lake Titicaca. Rumored to have a bunghole that gets very angry if it does not receive toilet paper. Cornholio the Great is often seen walking around with his shirt over his head and his hands in the air, chanting songs about his power, and his bunghole.
"I am Cornholio! You do not want to face the wrath of my bunghole, for I need TP!"
