I want to fill the gap between my 7'6" Predator and my 7'6" Centaur. I really like my (non-premium) 8'0" Terminator, and am strongly leaning toward another 8'0" stick. Candidates:
  1. RGP80 Premium Predator, 8'0", 50 - 100# rating
  2. RGP80 Premium Terminator, 8'0", 30 - 80# rating
  3. CX80 Raptor (blank), 8'0", 50 - 80# rating
  4. RCX76 Raptor, 7'6", 50 - 80# rating
Current plan is to use a Penn Fathom 40 nld2 on this new stick, loaded with 80# braid, to fish 80# leader. 2nd choice reel is a Mak 15T, but the extra weight and smaller line capacity make me trend toward the Fathom 40 (I have one of these already and really like it; excellent free spool and strong drag). Mission is the better grade of BFT we are seeing, fly line and sinker rig. I want something a little lighter and stealthier than my Centaur/Mak 16 rig.

Thoughts? Pros/Cons of these sticks for this mission? Thanks!

I love my Cx80 Raptor! It’s paired with the Okuma Andros 16lla. It’s a really good 80# live bait stick. I even killed a bluefin on the flatfall for good time sakes.

My brother got a 143lb bluefin with the RGP Terminator and a Speedmaster 16ii combo fishing a sinker rig on 80lb braid with 20' of 80lb Seaguar Blue top shot no problem. To me, the RGP Terminator has more backbone than the RGP Predator...Jaime from Bob Sands thinks so as well.

I was using 25#+ a couple of weeks ago for those big YT at the rocks. Had to push the Mak 16 w/80# to full after a YT got grabbed by a Sealion in the middle of the night. I got it back with just the tail chewed!

Raptor for 60#, Centaur for 80#, Viper for 100#, Invictus for 130#... YMMV, but not by much if you pull hard.

How do you like the centaur with 25lbs?

Don't know, Centaur has only caught a couple Oregon Pacific Halibut up to 48#. Other than that the stick is a virgin... Fished it a lot w/Flat Falls, Sinker Rigs and some Fly Line on my recent 2.75 day on the New Lo-An but never got bit.

My cx80 raptor is paired with a HX raptor with 80# premier For sinker rig. the gp80 terminator sounds like it would be a good choice for your 40nld2. Can’t go wrong with any of them

Got it, that would be a possible choice depending on how far you push 80 or a raptor if you thought it was too much.

Some folks fish 80 like 60, some fish it like 100lb.

I saw Jamie's comments, not disputing, Jamie is super knowledgeable and helpful. I don't understand though...

The 80 RGP Predator blank is heavier according to the UC Catalog than the 80 RGP Terminator. The Predator and the Terminator share the same butt section, distinguishing characteristic is that the Terminator uses the tip taper of the Monster (less material, less stiff). And, UC rates the Predator 50 - 100 and the Terminator 30 - 80. How is it possible for the Terminator to be able to handle heavier line???

I would drive to Bob Sands and pull myself but it is a 6 hour drive...

I pulled both at Fred Hall this year and the RGP Predator definitely seemed more parabolic. The US Predator has a mod-fast action whereas the US Terminator has a fast action. If you put the carbon fiber wrap on both for the RGP series, the action translates over I guess. Both will be able to handle the 80lb line, its just a matter of what type of action you prefer...can't go wrong with either, just personal preference.

According to Jamie it was mislabeling/misrating by UC. I have both and fully agree...the RGP Terminator is an absolute little beast of a rod....more power than the Predator.

Sounds like the RGP Terminator is in the sweet spot for a stealthy 80# rig. I sure like my standard Terminator. Thanks for all the input Guys!

The Predator in either the us or gp has considerably more material in the blank than a Terminator so thats why the line rating is more for the Predator, but the Predator is also a moderate action which allows it to bend further down the blank where as the Terminator shuts off quicker making it seem like its a stronger rod. To maximize the Predator line ratings you have to get the lower section into play.

You’re gonna really like that Terminator for 80#. I just had one wrapped by Jake (Cowman) and it was a pleasure to use with my Mak 15T. I was on the NLA trip right after you I think! You went with Ian, right? Sat-Tue? I went on the Wed-Sat with Ian and Chass.

I’d be happy to let you see the one I’ve got if you want to compare to a factory wrap. Not including any Black Friday deals, I was only about $35 more into a full custom than off the shelf.

Received my 80 RGP Terminator today, Love It! Mounted my Penn Fathom 40 nld2 on it, casts a 4" swim bait tail very well in the pond. Hooked it to a tree and put 25# of drag on it, wow! Lots of power in this stick. Maybe April/May if I have my Covid vaccine I can hop a BFT charter and really test it out!
