Amy and I are on the American Angler this coming October 16 - 26. Assuming and hoping we will go to Guadalupe. Mapping out gear options now. Uncertain which is the better choice for 60# leader - our 7'6" US Predator, rating 50-80#, or our 7'6" Centaur, rating 60-100#. Pics below for each stick lifting 24# of water. What do you think?

Here is the 7'6" US Predator:

And the 7'6" Centaur

For reference here is a pic of our 3rd 60# stick, our 8'0" GP Terminator, lifting 25# of lead:

The Terminator looks to be in the sweet spot for 60# leader. Between the Predator and the Centaur which do you like better, and why? They are both coming with us of course! Just trying to figure out if I need to purchase another stick, or if one of the first 2 sticks will do a great job on 'Lupe Tuna.

For 60# leader we have a pair of Fathom 40 nld2s (80# braid) and a Mak 15T SEa (65# braid) to sit on these sticks.

The rest or our arsenal includes 7'6" Tilefish Jr and GP 80 Mega for 30# with Torque/Fathom (one of each) 25 nld2s, US 76HP and US 80 Terminator for 40# with Torque/Fathom 30/2s, the Centaur listed above which usually fishes 80# with a Mak 16 SEa, and our Viper with a Mak 20 SEa.

Use your terminator you show below. GP80 Terminator with a mak 15t is a perfect 60lb setup for the lupe. If you are looking at having a 2nd 60lb option i would go with your Centaur. Even though it's best at 80lb it'll give you that extra lifting power/recoil you need at the lupe. The biggest trick there is to lay the wood to the fish and get them on the deck as fast as possible before the taxman does a number on it. IMO the US Predator is more of a 40-50lb rod. Now if you can get your hands on a GP Predator then you have your optimal 60lb rod.

Amy and I both going, need 2 very good 60# rigs for this trip. Thanks for the advice! Agree the GP 80 Terminator is excellent for this mission, it is one of my favorite sticks. As is the Viper of course!

Day dreaming about an 8'0" GPX Raptor. Jamie @ Bob Sands says UC is doing the GP treatment for their Rail Rod line-up this Spring. That would be Something!

I have centaur and 2 US80 Predators and use 1 for 40 and the other for 50. I also have 2-GP80 Predators for 50#. The US80 will bottom out for sure with 60. The GPs are a more stiffer possibly fish 60.

But for 60, I love my CX76 Raptor. The Centaur is a bit too stiff for 60 as this is my 80# but if I had to chose between your rods, I say the Centaur.

Well frankly a 80 and 100lb setup need to be with you. Seems the fish have grown up a bit, and the sharks a lil wiser. I watch the light line shark feeders get frustrated. On a 100lb setup with quality floor leader my choice is still pink yo-zuri hook it crank it to gaff asap. So the truth is get bit more with lighter line = yes. Feed the sharks 8 out of 10 times. Get a lil older and wiser and quit going to Guadalupe and still fish the heavy stuff and take fish home with you. The sharks no longer wait under the boat…..you won’t see them as they stay just out of sight, that thump thump and then the slow steady pull into the horizon. The fees are also up, looks like 7-800 this year. I’ll keep my money and go to the rocks and ridge and feed the sharks there at no additional cost. And they have been horrible there as well. Spend the 7-800 on a longer trip not going to Guadalupe. Oh good luck and have a great day!

Where have you seen/heard 2022 Guadalupe fees $7-800? I know they went up last year, but not that much (unless you spent a week or so there).

I ended up with a second GUSA Predator after one didn't ship in time for my trip. I have the 8' and the 7'6". Some on here say the 8 feels a little stronger. Would one work for 50 and one 60? I had a PCH XH 7'6" I was going to use for 40/50 should I replace it with the 7'6" or try to sell it on here?

After sleeping on it I have decided to sell the 7'6" US Predator and purchase another 8'0" GP Terminator. I just never fish 50# leader and that US Predator is maxed out at 24#
I go the other way, I often fish 50# for yo-yo and Wahoo bombs. For me 60# is sinker rigs and occasionally yoyo.

The fees will reach 1000.00 per angler in the next few years. The sport boat operators will be paying a potion of the fees as they save on fuel. What part of get as much from the ding dong gringo is escaping the conversation? I have friends whom are in the know. Believe this. There are folks who believe feeding the sharks is a horrible thing we do. They wish to stop recreational fishing at Guadalupe ASAP. The only thing keeping the fishery open is money. EVERYTHING reaches a tipping point. Let’s just see where this one is. Want to fish Clarion or Socorro again? Start saving your money now for a chance to go back! It’s all about the money. I hope to fish these two spots again, they have not been fished for a while. All the best to you, do it while we can!

If you put that Mak15t on your UC RGP Terminator, that is the answer to your question - IMHO. Solid beast of a 60# setup, well balanced and good to go. Hope you guys have a great trip, and sometimes the taxman fades late in the year...

    Cheers~!

Yes absolutely, Pic #3/GP Terminator is in the sweet spot for sure. That US Predator is now For Sale at Bob Sands Tackle, and another GP Terminator is on order.

Yes! Amy will fish 60# leader with one of the GP Terminators and the Mak 15T SEa. The power handle, larger gears and lower low gear will make this reel easier for Amy to fish. I will fish 60# leader with the other Terminator with one of the Fathom 40 nld2s, which is getting the blueprint and power handle treatment from Cal's now. Can't wait!

I am assuming that 60# leader is likely a Go-To at the 'Lupe. If we step down to 40# I have complete confidence in both of our rigs (HP 76/Fathom 30/2 and US Terminator/Torque 30/2), and if we step up to 80/100# we will unlimber the Centaur and Viper with the Mak 16 and Mak 20.

We will bring other assorted sticks of course, but these 3 line classes seem likely to get the most usage at the 'Lupe.
