im stuck. Getting my gear together for 2.5 day trip in Aug out of H&M. This is what I have so far. (Tri helix rod by turners uses phenix axis blank - with a lmore faster action than the axis.. not as whippy)
    1. 20lb - avet sx - tri helix mh 8’ rod
    2. 30lb - Fathom 25n - tri helix h 8’ rod
    3. 40lb - Fathom 30 Ld single speed- *need advise
    4. 60lb - Fathom 40 2spd - tri helix xh 7’6” rod
    - so looking for a 40 lb setup rod to fish on the trip. Either phenix or Calstar. This would be used for *live bait, *yo-yo and *dropper loop. So i want it case I need to put a heavy weight if dropper looping it won’t look like I got a giant fish on full bendo or a big yo-yo iron. That’s why leaning towards Calstar as phenix might go full bendo with a 16ounce torpedo... but I also need a tip that’s good for live bait. Grgr875H Calstar or 700m? Looking for in the 7’6” range... kinda lost in their site as some rods are totally identical in everything except the model numbers ex. 700h and 7400... Or which phenix would fit the bill?

I’m leaning toward Calstar 700h or equivalent. That fathom 40 would go well with Calstar 700xh. If fishing over reefs you need stopping power. Personally, I use a Torque 40 ld2 with a Calstar 770h as a yo-yo outfit. You never know what might be lurking.

I am somewhat biased because I only fish Calstar rods.

You might contact Rick in the H&M office for his insight. He runs the tackle end of things there and is a great guy!

    Good Luck with your selection.

I fish 40# on a Calstar 875h cork special with a fathom 25nld2. It’s a very versatile set up that can flyline a sardine, light yo-yo, light dropper loop, or toss heavier megabait/coltsnipers. It’s become a favorite very quick.

As for the different numbers in the same series (I.e. 700xh vs 7400xh or 765h vs 7465h) the model with the added 4 is a faster action than the original.

I use 2 of the Graph fighters 700M's , one for yo yo
and one for Dropper Loop , and
    they work great.

I like both the Calstar 700mh and the 875h. I use them with a penn torque 25nld2, an accurate bv2 500, or a Talica 12.

Great info! Just to make sure, are we talking about the graphiters live bait series? So the models with a 4 is faster action. Ok. Yesterday I was pulling on a 800m - mag deckhand graphite and it felt nice! Too long though. What does the mag mean? Btw, that 8 footer felt lighter than the 7’6” xh Daiwa proteus.

The mag series is faster action. I like the 800m for 25-30. In the grafighters I suggest you pull on the 700mh, 700h, and 875h.

I used a Calstar GFGTR 700m before switching to Phenix psw700h.

Both paired with a fathom 25n2speed.

I like my 875h for that purpose. You should bring some lighter star drag reels for smaller bait. Most paddy fish are small. I’d bring another 20lbs setup.

Taking a revo toro 60 or 50 (or curado 300e)and either the 8’ or 9’ (leaning to the 9’) M1 heavy.. lol. One thing I have a lot of is inshore gear... toros 50’s/60’s, Revo Inshores, curados, etc... with the rods.. Teramars, phenix inshore Assassins, ultra swimbaits, hybrids.. etc... so I’ll take one calico setup and put a 20 flouro top shot for this purpose.. I was thinking about it and you confirmed it. Thanks!

Bass gear is fine but not preferred. Something like a fathom 12 or Trinidad 12a with a calstar 800xl are referred.

I loooooooove the Hybrid XH for 40#, it's really one of the best options in Phenix's line, maybe even their best IMO. I use the 700XH for dropper, yoyo, and 40-50# flyline and I'm thinking a 869XH and 809XH are going to be entering the stable soon as I much prefer longer rods.

I know its not a calstar, but if you plan to yoyo i use a seeker G6470H for yoyo n bait 40-50 with a JX raptor. Also fish a torque 25n on an Axis 820 XH with the same line. Both are great, if bait fishing i grab the Axis. If yoyoing i grab the seeker when i have both on the boat with me.
