So a friend of mine who hasn't fished for years but was born and raised here (SD) is slowly reducing his collection. Today he gave ne a 9' stick that I'm sure is 20+ years old. It's a custom wrap and he is sure it's a Calstar but has no clue which blank. It seems to me to be a 30-40 rated rod.
I have many reels and I'm not going to buy a new one just for this, I have always been a bait/ yo-yo/ flatfall guy so no clue about tossing iron.
Of course I can just experiment but I'd like to narrow down the choices a bit. Here's what I've got that may fit the bill:
Daiwa X30 SHA star, Daiwa X40 SHA star, Saltist 20H star, Saltist 30H star, Saltist 40 LD2, Penn 25NLD2 w/ Cal blueprint (freespool for days), Penn 30 LD2 w/ Cal blueprint, Penn 40 NLD2 straight stock. I have other reels lighter and heavier but I'm guessing one of these should do it.
All reels have braid, most have long mono topshots. I'm guessing you want to cast mono, not braid, so I can always adjust accordingly. Thoughts?

Knot much experience in tossing iron on jigsticks, but with years of fishing, reading and watching others, that's what I think would work for you.
Hope this helps or just wasted your time.
Wally :-)

From what you have, go with the Sealine x 40 or Saltist 30.

I would if possible go with saltist 35, torium 16, 20, or Fathom 25n.

I fish 50 lb Spectra, to 3-4 ft of 30-40 lb mono.

Don’t do the narrow reels, that’s all I can say. Your wider reels cast better... XSHA 40, Fathom 30, TN 30, Newell 338... All of these reels are known as better reels compared to their narrow counter parts.

I guess fishing mono vs spectra makes a difference too. The sealine x40 is roughly the size of jigmaster. While with spectra it seems it doesnt hurt the distance much on a smaller reel.
