Need help from the pro's. This Texan is gearing up for some long range fishing enjoyment from 10 day
trips to 15 day cow trips out of SD. I have a Penn 30VSX and 50VSX that will be sent to Cal's for
hotrodding. They will be used for big baits, chunk, jigs, kite, and trolling. I need to purchase 2 reels
for casting sardines. Whick of the Mak's would you recommend and what size rope would you put on
them? Thanks.

For 10-15 day trips, I would get an MK16, and an MK20. Fill them up with 100# hollow spectra, use 80 or 100# top shot on the 16, 100 or 130# topshot on the 20.
You will love these reels :D

^ ^ The SEa versions are Special Edition. Basically all that means is they come hotrodded from the factory, i.e. open spool bearings with TSI301 for smoother feel spool, lager handles, more clearance between spool and cross bars and stuff like that.

Well, that's up to you, but for the $20 difference between the two series I would get the SEa if it meant increased performance (even if slightly).

You'll find out when you send the Penns to Cal, $20 is nothing for a hotrodded reel out of the box.

I'm sorry, I didn't even know you could still buy the non-SEa series.

It's a no brainer, get the SEa whenever available on whichever model.

On the 16, the only difference between the standard gold & the SEa's other than color are the spool bearings. Both the gold 16 & SEa 16's come with the 1.3:1 low gear and the larger sized handle.

Yep, Get the SEA series 16 and 20. As said you will love them. My understanding of the bearings is. The bearings are the same on SEA or standard. The shields and grease have been removed on the SEA, and replaced with the 301 or 321 oil.

It's been fished heavily, fish up to 317 landed on it.

I have fished the Mak 16 3 different trips and caught tuna, wahoo, a 7 ft. shark, and a nice sized marlin.
It works flawlessly every time.
The low gear has unbelieveable pulling power!
