Im looking at a few boats on CL and am either looking to buy a boat from 2 to 6k i have a couple things coming up that is making somethings in life uncertain so instead of spending more than that amount i figure worst case i wont have alot of money invested if i need to have a firesale or something else. Please share any comments or choice of boat u would take out of the postings i would narrow it down to if possible pick a higher priced and a lower priced one and why so i can have some feedback depending if i go higher or lower, thank you. Kinda leaning towards the whaler for 4500

Looking for something local kelpbeds rockfish would be like a whaler or something on the lower end. Skip or something higher priced for the overnights and overshore.
I live near san pedro and long beach

My first boat cost $1,800 (all I could afford at the time, but even with inflation it was less than your budget), and not even close to the size/seaworthiness of some of the boats available on your list. IMO, the key in your decision is reliability, so you need some professional help with that. Lots of stuff that can be wrong with a boat and if you don't have extensive experience, you could make a major mistake. Also, be prepared to get the upgrade itch as your financial resources increase.

I have the budget for a bigger boat but due to family issues we may move possibly next year that being said I don't want to worry that I have like 10k or more in a boat and now worry about having to sell it if i need to or where to store. also since this is my first boat I think the best bet is something like the 2k nothing pretty but would get the job done for local kelp fishing and oil rig or a whaler type for 5k. so I can see what it costs and entails to maintain a boat. tired of cattleboats and with our work schedules me and my wife have a hard time with those. we like early morning or twilight.
ive talked to a couple of mechanics so i will definitley hasve one look at it. just was curious wat people thought they would pick with the options
I have posted. thanks

I would consider a boat that can do anything you need it to do, and possibly take with you if you have to move.

I know I sound like a complete fanboy for Arima, but I will throw out some things I truly love about it.

1. It's a very sea worthy boat, with the ocean in mind in the design.
2. It has a cabin. I can take it Catalina for an overnight if I want to, or wherever. (Conditions permitting)
3. Cost of ownership. Because of its 12 degree deadrise, it planes at low speed keeping fuel consumption down. The downside to that is that is does pound you when it gets snotty out, but it's a compromise.
4. It's lightweight. Any vehicle with a V-6 or bigger can tow it. My F-150 has no problems pulling or stopping it. And because of the things I mention, I have taken it chasing tuna, to relaxing on a lake in the Sierra's. As long as I have 3' of water under me, I'm not worried.
5. Resale value. These boats hold their value very well, and often hard to find under 8K. Often they sell for 10K+ with modern power.
6. They are tough! The company boasts that not one boat has had a transom failure. If you look at how they are built, you would notice they are over engineered, and built like a boat much larger.

All these things can be looked up, so I try to keep it to facts and not just opinion. I'm not saying that's what you need to buy, but for your situation I think it would be a good fit.

I'm with you Roger--no one should be rude. Good luck, up front. Here is the key question to me--you told us your budget--what about your time? Do you have quite a bit of it? When it comes to ocean boats--you WILL pay a lot more than your budget OR, you WILL pay a lot with your time. Ocean boats don't have to be new, but they must be well maintained. And if you don't plan to keep it in a slip, it means you need to own, and maintain, a vehicle to pull it, the trailer, stem to stern, the boat, and the boat engine--and all the safety stuff you are supposed to have. Honestly, I understand anyone who says "I don't need it", because if you can't afford quite a bit up front, you will be buying something that will require your all important--TIME--to put it, and keep it in shape. One guy said "Arima"; I have owned one, it was nice, but it cost a whole lot more than what you have, to get one in decent condition (again, think boat, motor, trailer). I do not want to sound discouraging, but the ocean is very hard on your hull, engine, and trailer. If it were strictly a lake boat, that would be way, way different. Also, think long and hard about taking anyone--especially kids out in a boat you are not 100 percent sure of, from the safety side.

I brought up Arima because I think it fits in with what he wants. He also mentioned he wanted to keep the the cost low incase he has to sell. I'm sure if he moves to the Midwest, it won't hold much value there, but say if he moves to the pnw, its worth a lot more, or just keep it as its a good take anywhere kind of boat. I understand they are not for everybody, but because of their versatility, it's not a bad way to go.

Well I agree with you Bob--but with the budget he stated, I doubt he can get a well equipped, safe, reliable engine, hull, and trailer, that's all I'm saying. He may get an Arima, with an old Merc that hardly works--if works at all, for that money, IMO.

True, but he did post a few boats that were way out of his suggested budget, and mentioned he could afford more.

Jigstrike's boat has been on the market for a while. It might not be perfect, but I think a little love added to it, it would be a fine vessel. I think if that boat were 500 miles or more north, it wouldn't have lasted a week. For what he's asking, I think it's a good buy.

You could buy that 16' sea nymph in the classifieds for $800 and buy a used 4 stroke 40-50 horse for 3-4k to make a killer little kelp rig. But it is little and you have to pick your days and play it safe. Aluminum really isn't the best first boat for ocean runs, they are unforgiving and take some experience to run in big seas.

The fly bridge Skippy is a good choice if it does not have an OMC drive.
I also like he whaler with the mahogany console. The Whaler would be a lake/ inshore boat, and the Skippy would be an ocean boat. The first question to ask yourself is what are you going to use to haul the boat? Do you have a 3/4 ton truck? If not you can skip the skippy unless your are close to the water in which case a full size 1/2 ton could work 5L or better. If you have a mini truck, stick with the whaler or something under 2500 lbs on the hoof.

Craigslist information: You guys probably know this, but in case you don't. If you want to search all the craigslist sites with one search, go to "google advanced search", then put in your keywords, then scroll down to "site or domain" and put craigslist.com; the downside is you will get hits as far away as New York--but on the flip side, you might find something you might have missed otherwise. It is far from perfect though, because people that sell don't always put down the magic word you use, for example, if you put "cuddy four stroke", that's great, but the guy selling might HAVE a four stroke and simply did not put it in the title--then you might miss that one entirely.
