Haven't fished since November 13 (work is why) and really needed to get on the water. Robert had Friday off and so did I; what to do... what to do... The plan was I'd pick him up around 3:30 Friday and we'd head down to the Kai'Nana and make sure she's ready to go. About 10:30pm Thursday cell phone rings, that's never a good sign. It's work and there are significant issues, it is what it is, get to work things straighten out as quick as possible and I'm back to the house about 3am, perfect just in time to get into the fishin' duds.

We get the boat loaded up, push off and its early enough so we try to catch some akule, get some halalu but slow, run out to the buoy and to our pleasant surprise its holding hungry opelus, good deal. Live well is full and away we go. The word was no need go too far and that was evident as we kept heading out and noticing all the boats turning left, turning right and turning around. Nobody can find the porpoise, the water is nice so we just kept heading out. About the 20 mile mark I ask Robert if he'd take the wheel as the "no sleep" night before is catching up to me. Get the top of the fish box all nice and comfy thinking I'll get a little sleep. Just lay down and hear a voice from above (Robert in the tower), hey I found 'em!!! OH BOY! And you guessed no one else is around.

These guys are almost moving at trolling speed so it takes some time to catch up to them, no birds, plenty of porpoise all moving in unison, but not acting like they are chasing any bait. Marked a couple fish down around 40 fathoms, at least they are in them. Maybe 20 minutes into the endeavor the stbd flat line goes, by the time I get down to the deck I see the port rigger line isn't up in the release clip anymore.

Robert stays on the first fish, I get the deck cleared, get Robert's fish to the boat, gaffed and on the deck, I get to battle the second fish, this one has some size, gaffed and on the deck.

We felt great about our fortune, made a couple of more passes along with about 30 other boats, never baited and headed in early. I wish I could put in to words how lucky/fortunate/blessed we feel...

Good trip considering you didn't have the captain aboard. Way to end the year and welcome the new year with some nice sashimi. I wish I had a bigger boat I'd follow you around. The way you been catching the yellow guys maybe I'd get at least one. Best wishes for 2012.

    Pat and Robert,
Awesome catch. Gonna head out tommorow and tuesday then the boat gets prepped for my extended Afghan vacation. You and the admiral have a great 2012 and leave a few cows for my return next January.

    Pat and Robert,
Couldn't ask for a better way to end your 2011 fishing year!!!!!!!!!! Yes, you are blessed! Congrats on a great pair of "yellow guys". I'm sure that will help to pay for some fuel cost and still have plenty of fish to go around .......Have a great New year and many wishes for a safe and prosperous 2012!

Thanks Jimmy, we just got lucky; and good goin' to you guys again for your ahi.

    Thanks Glenn.

    Thanks Mark... Cheers.

Thanks Steven, I'm convinced that the tower provides a distinct advanatge. When we were stopped fighting the fish 2 boats went by us but never saw the porpoise and went the wrong direction.

    Thanks Eric.

    Thanks Scott.

    Thanks Scott.

    Thanks JB.

Thanks Capt Don and right back at ya to you and yours...

Thanks Mike, Santa brought a GOPRO, but still haven't powered it up yet; I'm sure I missed some memorable moments from that day.

    Thanks Ryan, happy 2012...

Thanks Joe, good luck today and tomorrow and if you make it back for a day or 2 give a shout we can take the Kai'Nana, no need setting your boat up. Be SAFE and shoot straight.

    Thanks JB.

    Thanks Brian.

Thanks Russ, have a great year as well.

    Thanks Mike.

    Aloha

Pat and Robert, good job on the ahis. Nice pics but too bad Nerlie wasn"t there because she does a great job of catching the stand up action. I guess we'll just have to wait for the GoPro to be set up.
