Throw the popper!

Well, it doesn't get much better than this. For the second straight weekend in a row it was wide open on a great grade of yellowfin off the Orange County local banks. Finally we get a little taste of what the guys out of San Diego have been spoiled with all summer.

Stephen and I left my slip in San Pedro early Saturday morning and got three scoops of awesome 4-5 inch sardines from San Pedro Bait. We headed for an area well outside the 277 and away from the rest of the fleet.

At first light we found a gigantic kelp paddy that was loaded with 6-8 pound yellows. We got a few on the popper (all released) and then left after convincing ourselves that there weren't any dorado around.

It took us about an hour to get on a school of yellowfin that wanted to bite, but when we did, it was insane. We found this school the good old fashion way.....by seeing fish jumping clear out of the water!
The tuna stayed with us for over 3 hours, crashing 360 degrees all around the boat. All it took was a few dines chummed off the corner every once in a while to keep them interested.

While we only managed a few fish on the poppers, it was instant on bait. Fish ranged from 10 to 30 pounds, with a few monsters that sawed us off. Between the two of us we probably released close to 30 yellowfin, keeping only two fish each.

Average grade we were getting.

Jackpot fish of the day, a nice 30+ pounder.

Lowlight of the trip for me was losing a nice Trinidad 12A and Teramar rod combo over the side while trying to release a larger tuna. That one stung for a while, but now I have an excuse to stop by Sav-On Tackle for some new gear...lol.

Great day.
