I wonder why the 3/4 boat have better fish count than the fleet.

Most of the meat seems to be local so far this season.Generally the overnight + boats will not fish where the 3/4 day boats are.

And it depends what is being targeted. The San Diego count is mostly rat yellows. The Malihini went to the Coronado islands today (passport required). The longe trips are going for yellowfin and they just haven't hit hard yet.

Its more of a pb bite right now and CLOSE. The fish are not responding to chum and fin bait as much as a shot at some troll fish here and there. Also its a money thing, if peeps are willing to go overnight or longer even if fishing is better close, they are gonna go.

As you can see, there is no need to book a 1.5 or even a 2.5 day trip right now, you're just throwing $310 or more away. The operators don't care cuz their schedules are booked and the extra half day they are charging is just bonus in their pocket. If they really cared they would reschedule to 1 days and fish where the fish are.

Why will the game fish be here if the bait disappears?

that's not really true. the problem is if you booked a 1 day to 1.5 days and the boat is hanging outside of the point, people are gonna be pissed. as for the bookings, only the weekends are somewhat full. the weekdays are running about half full.

You're idea of rats must differ from mine. Just fished the SD Friday and I'd hardly say they were rats. The fish were all 15 to 25 grade. Mostly in the 20's. That's confirmed. Captain and crew put in work and go the extra mile. I swear Booger is part fish. Lol. If those are rats then I'll take them day long. Captain skill has a part in it and Booger's got a sick sense.

Yeah could have had buddies tell me wrong info. Most have said all the sporties were catching limits or near limits of the 10-15 pounders. If you got betters ones then that's awesome and great catch! I wasn't poking any one boat. Good to see folks defend the boats they fish!

I was on the malihini today... mostly fish in the mid teens with a few better grade. I lucked out and got a 25-27lber :D (too bad they don't do jackpot). Weather was a complete shit show though. I really wish the San Diego wasn't chartered today, I don't know what they're doing but holy shit they nailed it every single day this week. But yea after wasting money on fruitless bluefin trips these last 4 weeks, I think its local fishing for me unless things change drastically or someone gifts me a boat.

The San Diego has been going down past the rockpile, just a little WNW of the point at El Descanso. I went out last Monday and there were no PB's and only the Mission Belle tried to go that far but stopped about 5 miles short of the point. YT were 15-25lbs. Malihini only goes to the Islands and hardly ever goes farther than that. The captains on the San Diego are nuts (in a good way) and will drive for hours to find the fish.

Thats not what fishdan said....he said the fish will go nuts once the bait is gone...eaten. The fish are here, but too much bait around for them to respond well to chum..etc. Once the bait thins out they will be looking to eat hooks! We can only hope that is what needs to happen...still early in the season.

No rats on The San Diego on Saturday. Ended the day with 251 fish. My brother and I kept 10 and gave away 7 to those who weren't so lucky. All of the 15-25lb fish you could have.
