    Sorry for the newbie question but I'm just getting familiar with ocean fishing after a lifetime of freshwater. I just picked up a (new to me) 21' BW and have been having a blast finding structure and fishing for rockfish, lingcod, etc. Do I understand correctly that the season ended for these fish today? If so, what are you all chasing starting tomorrow? Thanks for any insight. I tried to CA.gov page and was not sure I understood what happens as of tomorrow. Happy New Year everyone!!

    http://www.eregulations.com/california/fishing/saltwater/

    Closed Jan 1 to end of February are all rock fish species, lingcod, cabazon and sheephead. Better study the regulations and measure your kept fish with a reliable measuring device as the warden may not give you a break for claiming ignorance.

    something that you wont find online but DFG & regular halibut guys know about:

    halibut shrink 1/2"+/- after they die. set you minimum size at 23" for those.
    other species shrink a bit, too, so be generous in you measurements.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    double check how measurements for the various species are taken.
    bonita are also available and there is a 2-phase size limit for those.....as with yellowtail.
    Good Luck with the Whaler and fishing expeditions. I don't want to hear about you getting any dumb-ass "I shoulda known better" citations. :D
    Not much to add, except that white fish is also closed as are certain sharks. It's easier to figure out what's open than what's closed and this web site usually has it right:
    https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Fishing-Map/Southern
    Green = open.
    In terms of sculpin...
    It seems like this year's season doesn't start on January 1. They might have moved sculpin to the same schedule as rock fish though I haven't seen an announcement.
    Be sure to read up on the cleaning regulations on fish. Different fish have different rules. You don't want a citation for filleting a fish and not leaving a big enough piece of skin on it for identification. If you are not sure of the regulation then clean your fish at home to be safe.
    A few good books that will help you with the learning curb.
    The Local Angler by Brandon Hayward
    "Between Two and Twenty Phathoms" and "In the Gray" by Mark Wisch.
    and nice job on the triggers. Still on my list for "local" fish.
