If you want to get the most for your money you can find a Penn 113 YT Special with 4 to 1 gearing for under $100 that has killed more fish yoyoing than any other reel. Yes it's old school but is a proven tool. Search the classifieds and you may find one.

What do you have? A Torium 16 or 20 would be good. I don’t yoyo with an 8 1/2’ rod but it’ll work.

An used silver saltiest 40 is about $100, or an used penn Fathom 40nld is about $200. Check the classified. Yo-yo is a reaction bite, don’t fish anything less than 40lb.

7ft rod or 6 1/2 is more comfortable when yo-yo fishing. A Baja special penn would be a nice reel

I paired my Baja Special on a 6 1/2 foot rod. 80lb spectra to either 60 or 80lb mono. Probably a short 50 yard topshot. I’ve ripped a lot of lips...

Accurate 665h 2-speed about half filled with 65lb spectra and the rest with 50lb on a G/F 700h.

    It's a kickass combo

I’m a Shimano guy, but for yoyo specifically I found a smoking deal on a Penn Fathom 40NLD. Keep an eye out for good deals.

I like the Penn squall 40. I have one cheap if interested but it's left handed.

Get a Torium 20, Saltist 40, or Fathom 25N and with that rod it can double as a surface iron rod if needed.

Tough question, for years it was a 113HN and SS6465H. 80lb braid 2/3rds, 50lb izor to the top from there. That and a heavy 6x in scrambled egg or doodoo swirl is basically an instrument of yellowtail destruction.

More recently with all this bluefin around I’ve been bringing a 2 speed 60lb setup and using it for yoyo when needed than the other way around. But I miss grinding on yellows with the single speed, that baja Special is a beast of a reel.

My Avet JX 6/3 is now old and reliable. I use it with 40lb test and can't justify replacement. It is still my first choice.
