Just curious what the SMALLEST boat you have taken offshore or Catalina/Nados/Channel Islands?

What size and model?

How far out did you go?

Was is crazy?

Myself nothing crazy I have taken a 18' Bayliner Ski boat from Long Beach to Catalina a couple times. Wasnt too crazy at all.

I did see a guy on the backside in a good swell in a 13' Whaler.

My family took our old Defiance 220 NT to the cortes bank (105 miles out) give or take. We also took our Boston Whaler 170 montauk to the 43 mile bank fishing paddies.

None of it was that crazy, you just have to watch your weather windows and not be afraid to cancel your trip last minute.

15 aluminum to Coronados and about 10-15 off LJ, many times, no worries. Also took that boat to many islands in the Sea of Cortez, more worried.

Little scary, mostly painful.

I've circumnavigated San Clemente Island on my Boston Whaler Montauk 170 in less than ideal conditions. I usually try to do an island trip at least twice a month during the summer months.

I remember there was a guy on here that made trips in his 14' aluminum to Cat. Nailed a few seabass in it.

I've done a bunch of trips in the past in a 13' whaler. Shark trips, Nados, and one trip in particular that I will never forget.

Don't remember what year, but it was way back when, and I was all stoked after hearing stories of mooch albies out on the grounds. Well I talked my buddy into it and we headed off waaaay past the Nados on this little whaler with nothing more than one boat compass, a car compass, a CB radio and the boat filled with gas cans..... not even really sure where we were going or what we were doing...... but damn it, we were going to do it LOL

We got far enough past South Island to where it was just a tini speck, and we both looked at each other and decided it was time to head back. No albacore, but I did pluck a Sea Turtle out of the water (no shit) and took it home and that night put it in with the other turtles at the entrance to Sea World (back when the front entrance area had a Sea turtle area). They must have tripped out in the morning when they discovered a worn out looking turtle with green alge on it's back among all their GQ looking ones..... I bet a few people were scratching their heads and saying WTF LOL.

Bayliner... advertised as 15' but measures 13, not an ocean boat.
Saluki's bay runner is a much better ocean boat, my Bayliner is a bass boat and will take water over the bow easily. Combine that feature with the original equipment Force outboard and you are sure to have exciting trips.
    ADVANTAGES
Makes all the fish you catch look bigger
Every trip is a happy one. Even if you go out and don't catch anything you will be happy.... just to have made it back alive.
Makes for a trip you'll never forget.... after all life is all about making memories.
    :rofl::rofl:
There is a fine line between balls and stupidity, we have all walked that line at one time or another. Hopefully as we get a little older that line becomes a little more clear. A good man has to know his limitations. (dirty harry)

So Travis, are you getting ready to go out and do some shark fishing soon?

It's good for the kelp beds when the swell is under 7'

I think I can pretty safely and honestly say that mine was borderline stupidity and insanity on the day we went looking for albies. I seriously couldn't guess how far we were, but it was way the hell out there:imdumb:

    did you tow fuel?

flat seas i get 7 knots a gallon, average 6-6.5 on most trips. my main tank is 16 gallons, i take a lot of desert cans with me. those were all separate trips for the most part. the 295, 238 trip was the farthest i've ever gone. 4 hours down, got into the Albies and 8 hours uphill on the way home. it was pretty miserable heading home.

10 miles west of Condom bank in my 18 Seacat. We on a paddy and this 50 Viking rolls up and asks what we are doing out there in that canoe. Ride out was bumpy but the run home was downhill at 25 knots.
