Went on a 3/4 day a while ago on a wide open dorado bite (123 landed) and had a blast. A few guys hooked up with Bluefin Tuna on 20/25 pound line. Old guy fought his for 2 hours and lost it in a heartbreak. Another landed a 50 pounder (on 25 pound line) after an hour fight...I was very impressed!

Just wondering...what was your biggest Tuna landed on light line and how long did it take?

2 years ago on a 4-day, my wife hooked a nice YFT on her new pink Avet SX (1st gen) on a 25# rod. It sounded, and after 25 min or so of not being able to lift it she tapped out. With lots of palming against the foregrip, I was able to bring it to gaff in about 25 more minutes. Her reel was backed with 50# spectra and a 30# mono topshot. The tuna went 89.6# prior to gill/gut…

My next goal is to land a 4:1

115 on 65 and 156 on 80. Not really light.

I did however lose a yellowfin that looked 100ish at gaff on 50lb. That was heartbreaking, only took about 45 mins

In 2000 on the Amigo someplace behind Cortez Bank spent 3 hours and 45 minutes pulling on an 80# Big Eye on 20# line on a Calstar 800 XL…….was expecting to hook an Albacore but it turned into a Big Eye. While I battle the fish the rest of the group (Dana Wharf Rod and Reel Club) landed 75 Albacore.

All fishermen are liars, but here goes.:) 73# Bigeye on 30# mono. Hey it was ‘99, didn’t know what fluorocarbon was, didn’t have much technique. Unaware of the rail technique, how long, too long.

.....in the day... 30 (2 speeded Cal special)... 5 fish between 190# and 268#... all on #50 HI Seas Grand Slam (Mono)...#125 Jinkai Leader. Not one foot of Braided anything. Did it the old fashion way.... Stinger Bucket harness and Smitty Belt. Fastest.... 206# was in 27 minutes.

P.S. When these fish were caught.... the Skipper and Crew "told" anglers not have ANYTHING less than #100 with #200 leader.... in the water.

When I was on my third fish....lol... with that Smaller 30 International... guys caught on.... and we got a bunch of fish to go. Kind of like LUPE you fish what THEY'RE eating.... not what YOU WANT....lol. I made the call.... and it paid off.... for me .... that day.

Took a long time, wayyy tooo long.
I can still hear the ping, ping, ping of my line as I was about 3/4 way done and had to get that damn fish in because that hole in its mouth I just knew was getting bigger and bigger.

Aside from the initial run it was just a 40 foot back and forth for over an hour.

Was doone with fishing for a few minutes after I got that b*tch to gaff.

I suck at landing bluefin but my brother has landed a few big ones on less than ideal gear. Last year he got a (taped) 160-170 on 40# with a fathom 25N 2 speed. Private boat
