What epoxy are you using? Most recently, I have been using D2 then I went to Gen 4 now back to D2. In the past I have used classic rod coat and Flexcoat (but that was like 15 years ago). I am almost out of D2, did not really like the results of this last batch so seeing what everyone else is using. Maybe there is something out there that I “need” to try. Appreciate the info.

I’ve been using d2 and really like how it’s been coming out, usually. I just finished a rod this week and had a tough time with the cold weather. Felt like it was kicking off/ gooping up quick and I had to use heat to get it running again after applying.

What problems are you getting with d2? I havent tried g4 yet. I used flex coat in the beginning but like d2 better.

Annoyed that I keep having to heat up the one so it is no longer solid (I think the white one). I don’t dislike the D2, it just does not seem to lay down nicely.

started with flex coat waaaaay back, but it yellowed badly! they've since changed. i like Classic, but they're too hard to find. finally i've settled on "EnviroTech". cheaper, always available at Michaels, and works the same as classic, dries faster than ProCoat (formerly aftcote).

stuff may be the same clear as XYZ, just labeled differently?

Used D2 for a long time, started to get a lot of inconsistencies especially in winter time.. still use it on tiger wraps or marbling when I need a faster cure time..
And then gen 4 on most everything else. Switched to gen4 couple years ago and haven’t had any issues, love the way it goes on and pretty much bubble free..
    Does take longer to cure…

I had a batch like that. Apparently happens from freezing during shipping in the colder months of the year. That stuff was over 3 years old. I just pulled it out, cause I moved, and gave the warm water trick a try.

Casey is correct, there is nothing wrong with it. It came out nicely on some test patterns getting back into it.

    No problems here.

I haven’t wrapped a rod in A LONG time, but back in the day (20-30 years ago) when I first started, I used FlexCoat. It was pretty much the only game in town. I worked at a few tackle shops wrapping rods and they had me use FC as well. We sampled some other finishes (forgot the names) but although they stayed clearer than FC, they tended to crack at the guide feet.

In the early 2000’s I discovered AftCote by Aftco and fell in love! Dried and stayed clear, long working time, easy bubble release, and wasn’t thick so it went on easy. The only problem with it was that the 50/50 mix HAD to be accurate! No eyeballing with measuring cups… syringes were a must. It went on thinner than FC, so multiple coats were sometimes needed. It also took longer to cure, but that didn’t bother me.

The shops I worked at stuck with FC because they wanted their rods done quick, one coat and done. I made my personal rods with AftCote.

Last I checked AftCote no longer exists and there is a bunch of other products competing with FC. I haven’t tried any of the new stuff though.

I have used EnviroTech, price is great. The issue I had with that is it fish eyed like crazy with Madeira thread. But after the first fish eyed coat, it went on fine. Hard as hell to marble though with the fish eyes.

CP is definitely a must with Madeira and any finish. A minimum of 2 coats. Three is good insurance.

    Who remembers Cor-Tac?
I can't say that I do. Did anyone else use Fullerplast?
I'm pretty sure John Collins at Truline used Tenaco finish. Very similar to the Fullerplast. Both were 2 part finishes and any excess from a mixed batch could be stored in the freezer in a sealed glass jar. I used a baby food jar. The trick was to bring it up to room temperature first before even opening the jar. I recall something about condensation affecting them. Also, wiping the inside of the lid helped keep it sano...

Ahh TENACO! THAT was the one that was on the tip o' ma tongue! talk about dusting off the ol' memory cells! that was my CorTac days. MFG recommended 16/1 mixture (or something like that) and i'd dbl it. dried SUPER FAST & Super Thin... thousand coats were needed, but it didn't yellow like Tenaco.

What happened to AftCote? The last rod I rapped was probably 10-12 years ago and I used AftCote. A friend recently wanted me to teach him how to wrap and when I went online to look for the stuff, it was no longer listed anywhere!
