Hi
On my last trip I was changing out the stock hooks on a Nomad DTX. I used Owner 220lb split rings but they were too weak and almost broke. So I changed the rings out to Owner Ultra 300lb split rings. But it was almost impossible to put a 9/0 7691 stainless on. It took 2 strong people.
My question is, do they make split ring pliers that will open the rings big enough and strong enough to handle the ultras?
BTW the Nomad worked great at trolling speed but not at traveling speed.
Thanks
Rich

Texas Split ring pliers in the appropriate size.. Large or XL. They have a v splitter that can handle most any large split ring. And yes, You can split them apart too far where the split ring can take a permanent set.. We carry these at Bob Sands Tackle in Van Nuys.

Cool. I have the KVD split ring pliers but they are for small stuff. We used P-line pliers and a screwdriver. The rings did stay a little spread but I think it was because the hooks were so thick.
Thank you guys fo the responses. I can always count on BD for advice.

Agree with the HPA. I tried several others that wouldn’t get the owner ring open wide enough. Got mine from Trophy Tackle. Photo is with #8 owner, 240 pound.

I use standard split ring pliers, a screw driver and a pair of needle nose vice grips to work with the heavy duty split rings. They are a little bit opened up once you finish the job but you can close them a little by leaving the vice grips closed on them for a period of time.

I found out the hard way about boats
I have the P-lines and they do not work on the 300 lbs without jimmying things and distorting the rings-The HPA’s were about $80.I decided to go to my local tackle shop (Erics) and have a solid welded for about a buck each.

Ehhh the Texas Tackle ones won't get them on big J hooks like that with ease; the way they're designed you're limited in the amount of displacement you can actually get without having to monkey them around to get them to open up enough. YMMV but I've destroyed more with the TT pliers than others. They're not the greatest, but the Shimano ones work ok, just have to be mindful to not over stretch them. More efficient pliers that require less working of the ring are less likely to plastically deform them.

I’ve always wondered if the brazed rings are as strong as the Ultras. I thought about learning how to properly braze. But I don’t know about the strength.

I was on a Ken's 10 day recently and he was using some black anodized split ring pliers which worked very well for big heavy rings. I believe he said they were Shimano, but not positive. He said he carried them in his shop, give him a call for info.

Go with the HPA’s. I got mine from the professor at TT. I just got off an Excel 10 day and several people, including Uncle Rick, sad they are going to order them from TT after seeing mine in action. John, Rick said he’d ask you to bring a pair for him on his next trip in, I think, April. I could’ve sold multiple types of pliers on my trip if had I had extras! I ordered a pair of cutters while on the boat and had them waiting when I got home today!
