Weather wasn't a problem this weekend. My son Dom and I had the opportunity to join my oldest (Max) and Darrell Johnson of "Far Corners Charters" on their 31' Ocean Master for a day chasing king and coho salmon off Westport, WA. The plan was to start where they left them the night before on the beach in front of the casino.

It was instant on chunky Silvers in 40' of water on whole herring behind a fish flash. We had 5 in the boat by the time we posted this picture on FB at 6:43 in the am.

Max cleaning the fish as they hit the deck did a quick stomach check and the findings were interesting:

On closer evaluation, these fish were stuffing themselves with D. Crab spore/spawn.

After working over the beach and only finding coho limits and no kings for all on board, the choice was made to move outside to see if we could find some worthy kings. (Note: we had a 90% ratio of hatchery silvers to wild in tight)

After hitting bait marks and bird schools for only coho, we made it out to the 200' line and saw a few of the charter fleet, Fishin Lures and some commies doing business, so we found our piece of ocean real-estate off from the frey a little bit and within 2 minutes Dom was hooked solid and doing work on our first King of the day!

After this we had a string of 3 blue sharks move in on our mooch'd baits, when on the stern we had a 7ft'r getting released, I came tight on a nice king on Far Corners spacious bow.

Its hard to explain how satisfying it was to see my own son working the deck and learn the charters ropes at the same age I was (when I grew up in San Diego, working on Harbor Islands, B Dock, 6 pack fleet with some legendary captains chasing tuna, marlin and yellowtail). But even more fun was hanging out with Max and allowing him to reflect what we've shared on the water since he was wearing diapers.

After the earlier coho, these kings officially limited Dom and I out.

Darrell and Max ran a fun and a very freezer filling operation, it wasn't long out deep and the boat was limited out!

On a day the forecast was wrong, fishing with Darrell Johnson and Max was the right call.
Nice fish and happy anglers.

Details:

We found our coho in 40' water on the north beach from the casino and south half way to the jetty. whole herring and fish flash flshers did quick work on the shallow water coho's. Work the birds and watch out for the crab gear!

Our Kings were found on the 200' line WNW of the harbor. we had kings and coho out there from 200' to the surface. The kings were mainly in the 80'-120' area of the water column. We mooched whole herring and fishing was quick. Sounded like just about anything was working herring, spoons, hoochies, and your favorite break away flashers.

I can't recommend Far Corners Charters with Darrell Johnson enough. If you want a great ride with a personable and experienced fishy captain give him a call. He is loaded with top of the line rods, reels, and electronics - in short, you will catch quality fish and have loads of fun doing it. He and Max will be running out of WP for Salmon and tuna for the remainder of the season.

I coudn't agree more, the bouy and surf reports both said it was going to be 8' swells at 8 seconds, with wind chop. I missed out again, glad to read the reports of others good times, I'll get there in 2 weeks.

Great report I'm looking fwd to fishing with him & max on the 24th of Aug

You're going to love the ride!!! lots of room to follow your fish around the bow dance floor. That has got to be a near perfect date in August to skull em on the bait or iron.
