If you are even thinking about a Tuna Trip to Westport you should go now. My buddy Bruce and I spent Wednesday and Thursday Salmon fishing on his boat the Prospect waiting for the weather that was promised for Friday. Now the wait was not bad and we did pick up a couple of decent Kings 16 and 20 pounds down by the Casino's on Wednesday after culling through what seemed like an unlimited amount of silvers but we were really there for the tuna, and we really thought Friday would be a five star day so we waited.
Friday morning brought another spectacular sunrise and as promised 10 miles variable winds. We headed out directly SW about 37 miles to the bluest, clearest water I have ever seen in this part of the Country. You could see tuna swimming all over under the boat probably down in excess of thirty feet while we were on bait stops. It was fascinating to watch sometimes 3 or 4 tuna coming after an anchovie. The weather was absolutely perfect all day. It was a little slow getting started out there while we looked around but once we found them it was non stop the rest of the day. Troll 5 or 10 minutes and Bam sometime 3 rods went off. We had good bait stops multiple times and by 1:30 we could not find another place to ice down a tuna. We came in at 30 knots on flat water, pretty much spent and enjoying the rest.
Our best action was 35 to 38 over 124 52 to 125 01
