Fished on the south beach opening morning for nothing! Wife finally said take me home! Drop her and daughter off at the dock and ran to the north beach. 30seconds in and rigger pops, my son to the wood to him, kept moving north and got a second just south of the casino.

Day two, started south of casino, got a short. Then soooooo slowww! Got furstrated, picked up and ran to Copalis river. Gear in and 5 mins later 15lb fish. Son wanted to bottom fish, ran to some rock piles and got limits of bass, lings then ran back to the beach. Could never find that last king.

What did not work for me, bait-nothing. South beach, got blank there.

What worked, Irish lord spoon took three fish, army truck took the fourth. 30-32 ft water, 25ft wire out.

Is that an Irish fish? Must be, it's green. Or is that Blue?
Love the pictures of kids getting into fishing. My first time out at Westport I was 8 years old and never forgot the great fishing every year with my dad.
Thanks for the post.

My oldest boy woke up at 5 am Friday and tried to get into the garage because he wanted to go fishing. Almost son. ocean is a little big for a 4 year old. If there were fish in 7 through 13 I would have gone there. I went to the ocean and sure enough no fish there either. Costco has good deals on Alaskan fish.

Loved the mixed bag of fish and the kid having a blast. I can recall clear as day being about12 and trying to reel in a 15# cod ( Atlantic ) with my dad and his buddies fishing off Maine and them razzing me about being weak. Fun to get him back 35 years later when he foul hooks a 40 pound halibut at NB and calls for relief. No such luck Dad, you crank it up. Miss the old boy.

I've read many articles on the interweb... none have stated that its been proven conclusively why lings turn blue.

I'm not being argumentative, as I'd truly like to know for sure. I get asked the question a lot by our customers and I'd love to have a concrete answer for them

I've also heard that the blue meat means the ling has been eating crab, but also I've asked a few marine biologists types and they told me that no one is 100% sure.

It's because they are sad. Duh! Quit overthinking things.
I actually found some info on this. According to the reaserch done by the univ. of Kali they are "mallinial lingcod" that self identified as a blue tic tac in order to break down air/water barriers.

Sorry to extend the thread-jack, and nice fishing report (!), but. . . some report the blue color is due to accumulation of biliverdin pigment (a bile or heme breakdown product).

http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/06/17/322920045/red-fish-blue-fish-where-the-fish-flesh-rainbow-comes-from

Not sure where they're getting the excess bile or heme to breakdown (feed, environment), or whether it's a special enzyme they have (genetic makeup). We've caught a lot of these over the years, and I will say that almost every blue one is a sub-30 incher. I can't remember catching a larger (probably female) blue ling. No answers but a couple data points,

I have never see a blue colored ling caught in deep water. Only seen the blue ones in shallow water. Always been told it was what they eat. But hay what do I know I'm just a dumbass fisherman.

Not taken that way at all. I asked a marine biologist in the san juans and while not 100% proven the only thing that made sense was octopus ink. I also heard the crab thing and asked him about that as well and his answer was that crab carry no color (dye) that would or could cause it. Lings are large consumers of octopus. So are cabezon. Lings and cabezon both take refuge in caves and when octopus are trying to escape they tend to briefly coinhabit with the predators. Made sense to me considering no underwater blueberry fields

Ditto this. I've caught lots of blue lings inshore... some small and some over 30lbs. Never saw a blue ling offshore in the deep water.
